As a fan of captivating performances and compelling stories, I must admit that Brian Tyree Henry is one of those actors who never fails to impress me. His portrayal of Phastos in Marvel’s Eternals was not only engaging but also added depth to the already rich tapestry of characters in the film.
In the extensive lineup of Marvel Studios’ comic book adaptations into films, the 2021 ensemble blockbuster Eternals stands out somewhat uniquely, leaving its cinematic future somewhat unclear. Notable actors like Oscar nominee Brian Tyree Henry are part of the star-studded cast that brought a specific group of alien immortals to life for the expansive 156-minute film directed by Academy Award-winner Chloé Zhao. Among these stars, Henry was one of the audience favorites as Phastos, a brilliant inventor who designs weapons and technologies for the Eternals in their mission to prevent universal destruction.
Recently, MovieWeb had an opportunity to chat with Henry during the Los Angeles promotion tour for his critically acclaimed movie, “The Fire Inside”. During this conversation, the gifted actor shared his thoughts on Marvel’s upcoming projects and hinted at the possibility of reprising his well-liked character in a future film or television show.
Henry shared with us his excitement about realizing a lifelong dream by becoming a Marvel superhero, not just any character, but a Black one that wasn’t confined to Wakanda. He was thrilled about this opportunity and expressed that if Marvel ever invited him back, he would jump at the chance. Henry also mentioned how Marvel consistently delivers powerful storytelling, often shattering barriers, and this is another reason he would eagerly accept a return invitation.
Having watched the movie with Deadpool and Wolverine, I find myself questioning: ‘Is Marvel planning to get even more explicit in future projects?’ As a fan who enjoys that style, I’m all for it. But let me tell you, my time there has been fantastic. I would love to return as Phastos again, and join the team once more. It’s intriguing to see where they will take the story next, given that I’m unsure of the current phase. If Kevin Feige invites me back, I’d be thrilled to oblige.
Weaving “Levity” Into The Fire Inside
During this time, Henry captivates the screen in the film “The Fire Inside“, playing the true-life coach of two-time gold medalist boxer Claressa Shields, portrayed by Ryan Destiny from “Grown-ish“. This powerful sports drama is directed by Rachel Morrison, known for her work as Director of Photography on “Black Panther“, and written by Barry Jenkins, a winner of the Oscar for his work on “Mufasa: The Lion King“.
Henry emphasized the significance of building a strong connection with his young co-star during breaks, rather than just focusing on the action scenes, since what Ryan was being asked to do was extraordinary. Essentially, she was taking on the role of a two-time gold medalist boxer, which required long hours of intense training and emotional depth in her performances.
As a movie critic, I strive to infuse every review with a touch of humor, for we’re chronicling the lives of authentic individuals. It’s crucial to pay tribute to their stories, yet remember that we, as creators, are human beings as well.
I aimed to assure Ryan that my space was primarily a haven for her, where she could unwind, laugh, or simply relax. This is much like what coaches provide their athletes – a space to be themselves. As coaches get to know their players inside out, they hold the secrets and keys. Similarly, I wanted Ryan to experience this level of comfort with me as well.
From Amazon MGM Studios, The Fire Inside will be released in theaters on Christmas Day.
