As a longtime Marvel fan and admirer of Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ incredible acting prowess, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia upon learning about her upcoming role in “Thunderbolts”. The fact that she received a first edition comic featuring Valentina Allegra de Fontaine from her husband is not just a sweet gesture, but a testament to the enduring allure of Marvel’s universe.
The upcoming Marvel films start with “Captain America: Brave New World” slated for 2025, followed by “Thunderbolts” a few months later. Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character Valentina Allegra de Fontaine will have another chance to shine in “Thunderbolts.” In fact, her character’s background will be delved into during the 36th Marvel film. What’s more intriguing is the unique present that Louis-Dreyfus’ husband gave her when she joined the MCU, which has me feeling quite nostalgic as a fan.
Apart from discussing her knack for concealing Marvel Cinematic Universe spoilers, even from family members, Louis-Dreyfus also shared some insights during her interview with Entertainment Weekly regarding her unique talent and the upcoming storyline for Valentina in next year’s Thunderbolts.
When I landed this exciting role, my spouse gifted me the initial Marvel comic featuring my character’s debut. It’s an original copy, isn’t that thrilling? Indeed, some of her early machinations are set to be unveiled, offering a deeper insight into why she acts as she does.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is discussing a comic book titled “Strange Tales” #159, which was published in August 1967. This comic book is notable because it features Valentina, a character who intersected with Nick Fury during the Jim Steranko run of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which lasted from issue #159 to #168. In this storyline, Valentina became one of Nick Fury’s love interests and a high-ranking member in the international espionage agency. Although Louis-Dreyfus is not the first actress to portray Valentina in live action (that distinction goes to Lisa Rinna in the 1998 Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV movie starring David Hasselhoff), her role marks the character’s most significant appearance outside of the comics. I’m delighted that Louis-Dreyfus’ husband obtained this issue as a celebration of her major casting in the role.
Regarding the “earlier plans” Louis-Dreyfus talked about, it’s exciting to gain a clearer picture of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in Thunderbolts. So far, we only know that she was married to Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross, as shown in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. However, her past remains a mystery. What is known is that she has been orchestrating her schemes for a long time and has enlisted individuals like Yelena Belova and John Walker to assist her. The outcome of her plans will unfold in Thunderbolts, but she has undoubtedly established herself as a villainous counterpart to Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.
On May 2, 2025, when Thunderbolts hits theaters, we’ll uncover these answers and more. Until then, you can catch up on Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ past roles as Valentina by streaming them with your Disney+ account.
