As a movie connoisseur who has spent countless holiday seasons immersed in the magical world of Christmas films, I must confess that the intricacies of plotlines often elude my attention during the initial viewing. However, rewatching classics like Home Alone 2: Lost in New York year after year has allowed me to uncover hidden gems, such as the origin story of Kevin’s Christmas miracle.

As a devoted fan of classic holiday films, I often find myself immersed in the festive spirit without delving too deeply into the finer plot points. However, there are exceptions like “Home Alone” and its sequel, “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” which I’ve watched so frequently that I can’t help but ponder some intriguing aspects of these films. It’s astonishing how, even after over three decades since their release, I continue to uncover minor details that shed light on the storyline. Recently, during my yearly watch of “Home Alone 2,” I found myself reflecting on a curious detail in the final scene – the arrival of a truckload of gifts at the Plaza Hotel suite where Kevin and his family are staying. This article discusses just such an observation.

We Know Who Sent The Christmas Gifts

It’s obvious that the presents were from Duncan’s Toy Chest since the truck was spotted outside the hotel while a group of delivery workers unloaded gifts. Later, when Buzz examines one of the gifts, he inquires about Mr. Duncan, suggesting this generous pile of toys is a gesture from the owner of the toy store that Marv and Harry had robbed the previous night. Additionally, since we witnessed Mr. Duncan discover Kevin’s note about the burglary and his apology for the broken window, it seems reasonable to assume that these gifts were his way of expressing thanks to Kevin for helping apprehend the thieves.

But How Did Mr. Duncan Know Where Kevin And His Family Were Staying?

With hardly any time for preparation, Mr. Duncan successfully delivered the presents to a child he’d encountered just once. How on earth did he pull it off?

It wasn’t until my recent viewing that I realized (or if I did, I didn’t connect it then) – but in the scene where Mr. Duncan reads Kevin’s note, you can clearly see that it was written on stationery from The Plaza hotel, with its emblem and name prominently displayed at the top.

Kevin also signed his full name at the bottom.

It seems that if Mr. Duncan had merely contacted the hotel, verified that “Kevin McCallister” and his family were still residing there, and requested the gifts to be sent, everything could have been arranged easily. Considering how remorseful the hotel staff was towards Kevin and his family at this stage, it’s reasonable to assume they would have been more than willing to assist.

It’s unclear whether I ever doubted how Mr. Duncan knew the exact location of Kevin and his family, or if I simply accepted it as one of his abilities to orchestrate miracles for Christmas when he chose to. To be honest, I still hold that view about him. Even if Kevin had disclosed their location through letterhead, Mr. Duncan remarkably managed to wrap and deliver the gifts to the hotel within hours (on Christmas Eve no less).

In the past, when discussing unresolved queries regarding the “Home Alone” films, this specific point hadn’t been brought up. However, upon watching the ending of the sequel, my attention was drawn to the confusion surrounding which family member received which gift. This question still puzzles me and causes a bit of anxiety (more so than wondering how Kevin McCallister’s adversaries, Harry and Marv, managed to survive their injuries). Yet, I can now rest easy knowing that any remaining curiosity about how those presents ended up in the hotel room has been answered.
