As a movie critic who grew up watching the original Karate Kid trilogy and then had the pleasure of witnessing the resurgence of the franchise through Cobra Kai, I can confidently say that the future looks bright for this beloved series. With the upcoming release of Karate Kid: Legends and potential spinoffs in the works, it seems that the saga of Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence is far from over.
Although the series may be concluding with Season 6, there’s good news for the franchise from co-creator Jon Hurwitz! During a Q&A session on X/Twitter before the release of the final episodes, he hinted at potential future developments, sparking excitement among fans.
The well-liked Netflix show that initially broadcast its episodes on YouTube Red is a follow-up series to the classic Karate Kid films. Even though this series brings the story to an end, the franchise plans to carry on with another chapter, titled Karate Kid: Legends. In the upcoming film, Raph Macchio will return as Daniel LaRusso, partnering with Mr. Han, played by Jackie Chan, to mentor a new “Karate Kid,” Li Fong, portrayed by Ben Wang.
The upcoming movie is scheduled for a theater release in May 2025, however, it’s possible that there may be additional Karate Kid projects in the works. Following the massive success of Cobra Kai, it appears that potential spinoffs could be on the horizon, especially if Hurwitz manages to make it happen. When questioned about the possibility of characters from Cobra Kai getting their own spinoff series, the showrunner indicated:
“I hope so. Actively working on it.”
Netflix finds “Cobra Kai” to be a comparatively budget-friendly production, considering shows like “Stranger Things” and “Wednesday”. The viewership for its final season has been robust, and critical acclaim persists. With the upcoming movie creating quite a buzz, it seems unlikely that they would allow the TV version of the franchise to quietly disappear.
‘Cobra Kai’s Ending Will “Embrace” the “80s Movies
After achieving remarkable success on Netflix, there’s been much speculation among fans about how Cobra Kai might conclude its run with a memorable finale. During a panel in November, Ralph Macchio offered some insights, hinting:
“We seem to be at the lowest point right now, but I sense we’ll climb back up. I’m quite optimistic about it. This situation feels like it’s leading us towards an iconic ’80s movie ending that I feel confident we will reach and move past. It just seems fitting to bring this chapter to a close, in the classic Cobra Kai style…
As per Macchio’s screen rival, William “Johnny” Zabka, the finale promises to be as grand and exciting as everyone anticipates. In the same gathering, Zabka himself expressed that the conclusion would live up to everyone’s expectations.
The creators conclude the series in an unforeseen, inspiring, and truthful manner; it’s a wonderful finale for all viewers, and we are incredibly grateful for having six seasons to share the entire tale.
Few shows on Netflix can last for six seasons, but Cobra Kai has proven to be an exception, impressing viewers with its ability to carry on the legacy of the original film series while introducing fresh faces and striking a perfect balance between nostalgia and novelty. Regardless of what lies ahead for these characters, the journey so far has been nothing short of exciting.
