As a child of the ’90s and early 2000s, I can proudly say that I was among those who witnessed the enigmatic debut of Count Orlok, better known as Nosferatu, in the iconic cartoon series, SpongeBob SquarePants. This peculiar vampire from a silent film released in 1922 took me by surprise, but it wasn’t until much later that I learned about his original cinematic roots.

The upcoming horror film “Nosferatu” is predicted to be this season’s scariest. However, some movie enthusiasts might not realize that it’s a modern retelling of an older production. But just how old? The original “Nosferatu” premiered in Germany as a silent film way back in 1922! Given the passage of time, it’s likely that many contemporary viewers haven’t encountered this classic before. If they are new to “Nosferatu,” this latest movie could introduce them to an iconic vampire figure, but it may not be their first encounter with the character.

90s and 2000s kids might remember that Count Orlok, a character from the old movie ‘Nosferatu’, made an appearance in the animated series ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’. That’s correct! A classic villain from a 1920s silent film has now found a place in the world of ‘SpongeBob’. But here’s the twist, Count Orlok is not just a one-time guest; he’s evolved into a recurring character in more recent episodes. One might wonder why ‘SpongeBob’ introduced a character that their main audience would likely be unfamiliar with. Let’s explore the role of Count Orlok in ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ and understand how it could have kept the legacy of silent films alive for an entirely new generation.

Nosferatu’s Debut in ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’

To be specific, the episode under discussion is “Graveyard Shift,” which originally aired during the second season of SpongeBob SquarePants in 2002. In this episode, Mr. Krabs elects to keep the Krusty Krab open around the clock, with SpongeBob and Squidward working perpetually. Boredom leads Squidward to frighten SpongeBob by recounting the tale of the Hash-Slinging-Slasher, a former employee of the Krusty Krab who lost his hand in a spatula accident, was struck and killed by a bus, and returns each week to exact revenge. Initially skeptical, SpongeBob becomes convinced by the story, and even Squidward starts to believe it as his invented signs of the Slasher’s return seem to come true.

The lights flicker on and off, the phone rings with no one there, and a bus drops off someone with a spatula for a hand. While the visitor turns out to be a new job applicant who called earlier and hung up, there’s still no explanation for the lights. We then see that the Nosferatu vampire apparently lives in the Krusty Krab and turns the lights on and off, though no one is phased by his appearance. It’s completely out of left field, makes no sense, and is peak early SpongeBob.

Although the character is called Count Orlok, the Krusty Krab staff identifies him as “Nosferatu” to make him more familiar. However, very few recognized this creature. The scene becomes captivating due to the characters’ unusual reactions. Throughout the episode, SpongeBob is petrified by Squidward’s fabricated tale yet remains unperturbed in the presence of the real vampire at the restaurant. Similarly, Squidward stays unaffected, and they all treat the “Nosferatu” character as if he were a typical Krusty Krab resident.

Why Nosferatu Appeared and How He Became a Recurring Character

In their creative process, the team opted against introducing a famous film villain and instead went with an obscure choice: a silent movie vampire from early 20th century Germany. This character, far from being relatable to young viewers, was not only left in its original live-action form but also had a smiling face superimposed onto it. Remarkably, they didn’t even adapt the footage to fit the show’s style. It’s said that they initially planned to create an original character, but writer Jay Lender proposed Nosferatu as an alternative. The series creator, Stephen Hillenburg, endorsed this idea, and thus, a cult classic was born. The characters’ indifferent response and the lack of further references to the vampire for several years may suggest that this was merely a humorous aside. However, Nosferatu had more appearances in store.

2018 saw the comeback of Nosferatu in the 11th season’s episode titled “The Night Patty.” Similar to his initial debut, this occurrence revolved around the late-night operations at the Krusty Krab. However, unlike before, a new team was on duty during these hours, with Nosferatu serving as the night supervisor. His look has been modernized; he’s now designed in the 1920s black-and-white live-action animation style, complete with vintage filmstrip effects. Since then, Nosferatu has made recurring cameo appearances, each one adding to his backstory.

In 2022, Nosferatu takes center stage in the episode titled “Squidferatu”, where Squidward and SpongeBob find themselves at his castle following a mix-up with the mail. Unlike previous portrayals, these characters initially express fear towards him before uncovering a misunderstanding. The episode also revisits the “flickering lights” joke from its inception, as the Phantom of the Opera performs the same trick within Nosferatu’s castle. Interestingly, Nosferatu appears not only in the main series but also in the spin-off “The Patrick Star Show”. Moreover, a younger version known as “Kidferatu” is recurring in the prequel series “Kamp Koral”.

While very few casual film buffs will be familiar with the 1922 silent movie, many others on the younger side likely know the name “Nosferatu” solely from SpongeBob. That could give the new film the name recognition that the filmmakers may have thought they’d get from the original flick instead. But if you are seeing the acclaimed Nosferatu remake just because of SpongeBob, it’s likely to be a very different take on the character. SpongeBob Squarepants is streaming on Paramount+, while Nosferatu is haunting theaters on Christmas day.
