As a long-time enthusiast of all things Doctor Who, I must say that this teaser for the upcoming second season has left me utterly thrilled and slightly bewildered. The blend of nostalgia and innovation is truly reminiscent of Russell T Davies’ tenure as showrunner.
As a passionate Doctor Who fan, I was thrilled when Disney+ and BBC gave us a sneak peek at what’s in store for 2025, featuring Ncuti Gatwa’s second season of this timeless sci-fi adventure!
During the yearly Christmas event “Joy to the World,” the following trailer was unveiled, offering a sneak peek at upcoming episodes. In these episodes, we see Ncuti Gatwa (from Netflix’s Sex Education) stepping into the role of the Fifteenth Doctor, and Varada Sethu is introduced as the latest companion traveling alongside him in the TARDIS.
In the article below, The Hollywood Reporter provides a detailed analysis, revealing key details scene by scene from the initial glimpse.
New Companion
Known to enthusiasts of “Doctor Who,” actress Sethu previously appeared in the 2024 episode titled “Boom.” This script was penned by ex-showrunner Steven Moffat, who also wrote “Joy to the World.” In this new role, Sethu will portray Belinda Chandra. Whether her character from before, Mundy Flynn, and the upcoming Belinda Chandra are connected remains a mystery for now, as the teaser carefully withholds that information.
Previously well-known on British television, Sethu later became a consistent cast member in the Cinemax and Sky One’s “Strike Back” series. Subsequently, she appeared in Colin Trevorrow’s 2022 film “Jurassic World Dominion”, and notably portrayed rebel Cinta Kaz in Disney+’s “Star Wars” series “Andor”.
Season Two, What’s it All About?
In the official summary, it’s revealed that The Doctor encounters Belinda Chandra and embarks on an extraordinary journey to bring her back to Earth. However, there appears to be a powerful force hindering their return, forcing the time-traveling TARDIS crew to confront perils, adversaries, and horrors of unprecedented scale.
In the teaser’s opening, it seems like an “enigmatic influence” acts upon the Doctor inside the TARDIS. Meanwhile, his voiceover remarks, “Beyond our universe lie even greater forces…” Carrying on with the routine, then!
Who’s Back?
As a devoted fan, I can’t contain my excitement upon witnessing the tantalizing 30-second clip that promises the comeback of my beloved characters! Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, makes her reappearance after a brief disappearance in the Christmas Special “Joy to the World.” I’m thrilled to see her alongside familiar faces such as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (portrayed by Jemma Redgrave) and Shirley Anne Bingham (brought to life by Ruth Madeley). This sneak peek also hints at the return of UNIT, a military organization that specializes in extraterrestrial activities. Known as the Unified Intelligence Taskforce, they were last seen in the season finale of 2024, “Empire of Death.” Can’t wait to see what unfolds!
In the upcoming Disney+/BBC spinoff titled “The War Between The Land And The Sea“, these last two characters are set to appear, as production has now concluded.
Mrs. Flood, who lives next door to Ruby Sunday, reappears. In an uncommon twist for “Doctor Who”, she directly addressed the audience multiple times. During the climax of the 2024 season finale, she gazed directly into the camera and declared that the Doctor’s tale would end in “utter terror.” Given this hint, it seems she has some valuable insights.
Anita Dobson, a beloved figure in the U.K., has played the role of Flood in various productions. On the London stage, she’s taken on numerous roles, one of which was Madame Morrible in the play “Wicked,” a character that Michelle Yeoh portrayed in the 2024 movie adaptation.
Is that Donna Noble?
Astute viewers might have done a double take, noticing a magazine showcasing a promo image for the 2023 Doctor Who specials with Catherine Tate from the Noble cast.
In just a blink of an eye, the Doctor and patrons of what appears to be a barbershop filled with soccer enthusiasts (certainly not from the U.K.) are swiftly pulled into some sort of celestial tempest. Upon careful observation, magazines floating around reveal the same previously mentioned image.
Fans of Doctor Who will recognize that this isn’t the first time the series has made self-references. For instance, in the 2014 episode “In the Forest of the Night” featuring Peter Capaldi as the Time Lord, a London bus with an advertisement for the show was deliberately displayed on its side.
“What the Hell Is This?”
During his being pulled away, the Time Lord exclaims a query that echoes back to our initial encounter with Gatwa (first seen in a trailer). After the 2022 special “The Power of the Doctor” was broadcasted, a sneak peek displayed him asking, much like before, “What on earth is happening here?” Indeed, he’s known for his colorful language.
Flying Saucers, Robots and Deadly Cartoons
The remainder of the trailer crams an impressive amount into just under 30 seconds: a futuristic setting bombarded by flying saucers that seem straight out of the 1950s sci-fi flick “Plan 9 From Outer Space”; two towering, red robots with friendly and menacing expressions reminiscent of the Emojibots from the 2017 “Doctor Who” episode “Smile”; and a comic character leaping from a movie screen to frighten viewers, suggesting a narrative set in 1950s America (showrunner Russell T Davies has hinted at an upcoming storyline in Miami).
“This Might Be the Long Way ‘Round”
Listeners might have perked up when they heard this sentence, as towards the end of the 50th Anniversary Special, Matt Smith’s character, the Eleventh Doctor, mentioned he was choosing a more circuitous route to return home (specifically, to the planet Gallifrey).
In response to his new travel partner’s request, “Doctor, I have to go home,” Gatwa’s statement echoes the impact of the “mystery force” observed during the attack on the TARDIS at the start of the trailer.
So, when will season two come out?
At this moment, we’re unsure of the precise release date for “Doctor Who” season two on Disney+, but it’s expected to arrive sometime in 2025. The first season debuted in mid-May 2024, so you shouldn’t anticipate the next episodes coming out that late in the following year. In a recent interview on BBC’s “The One Show,” showrunner Russell Davies hinted that the upcoming season would air “sooner than you might think.” During his previous tenure as showrunner, “Doctor Who” typically premiered around late March or early April.
The television series “Doctor Who” is created by Bad Wolf in partnership with BBC Studios, specifically for Disney Branded Television and airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Russell T Davies serves as both the showrunner and executive producer. Moreover, Joel Collins, Phil Collinson, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter also hold the role of executive producers.>
