As a die-hard fan who’s seen more superhero films than I can count, I find myself intrigued by Tony Vinciquerra‘s unwavering support for Sony’s recent comic book adaptations, especially “Madame Web” and “Kraven the Hunter.” While critics have been less than kind to these films, it seems Mr. Vinciquerra believes they were unfairly treated and that the real magic happens on streaming platforms like Netflix.
Despite the severe backlash, the departing Sony Pictures CEO, Tony Vinciquerra, continues to champion the movie titled ‘Madame Web’.
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, published on Thursday, Vinciquerra, who is leaving his position as SPE chief at the end of the year, defended the superhero film released earlier this year, directed by S.J. Clarkson and starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney. He argued that the film isn’t poorly made and believes the negative reviews it received are largely due to media bias.
“Let me briefly discuss Madame Web. The reason it didn’t do well in theaters is that it was heavily criticized by the press, but I must clarify that it wasn’t a poor film; on the contrary, it performed quite well on Netflix. Somehow, the press seemed determined not to support films based on Kraven [the Hunter] and Madame Web, and the critics were merciless in their reviews.
Vinciquerra went on to discuss how Sony’s other comic book movies faced similar challenges: “They faced the same predicament with Venom, but the audience adored Venom and turned it into a box office sensation. These aren’t awful films; they simply received negative reviews from critics for reasons unknown.
As a diehard fan, I’d put it this way:
At its opening, Madame Web earned $26.2 million, marking a disappointing start for Sony’s superhero movies. More recently, Kraven the Hunter, which hit theaters earlier this month, had a lackluster debut with only $11 million in domestic ticket sales.
When asked if there should be a fresh approach in the Spider-Man universe, Vinciquerra responded, “I believe a reevaluation is necessary, as it’s been plagued with issues. Launching another one would likely result in its downfall, regardless of whether it’s excellent or poor.
At the moment, Madame Web is rated as fresh only 11% of the time on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas Kraven the Hunter has a slightly higher freshness rating of 16%.
