‘Wicked’ Director Hints at Dorothy’s Appearance in ‘Wicked: For Good’

As a movie enthusiast with over three decades of film-watching under my belt and a particular fondness for musical adaptations, I must admit that the news about Dorothy Gale in ‘Wicked: For Good’ has me absolutely giddy with anticipation!

As a movie enthusiast eagerly awaiting Jon M. Chu’s rendition of “Wicked”, I’ve found myself pondering the identity of the actress who will bring Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz” to life. For those familiar with the Gregory Maguire novel, or even the Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman musical adaptation, they understand that the latter half of the book and the events reminiscent of the classic film (and original L. Frank Baum source material) intertwine in significant and thrilling ways.

In an exciting chat with Cinemablend recently, the director gave us a sneak peek about Dorothy Gale potentially reappearing in the sequel of Wicked: For Good. It seems like we’ll see more of this iconic character, played by Judy Garland, than we initially thought for the second film!

Per Chu:

Indeed, we have definitively chosen the actress who portrays Dorothy. You can catch glimpses of her in some of our previews. However, I can’t disclose the extent to which you’ll see Dorothy. To clarify, I won’t reveal how much she appears. That being said, I do believe it’s crucial for everyone who knows Dorothy, in their own way, to try to respect that as much as possible. Now, does our film share more connections with “The Wizard of Oz” in the second movie than before? Absolutely, yes!

How Does Dorothy Gale Fit Into the World of ‘Wicked’?

In the Broadway musical, Dorothy’s appearance on stage is fleeting as she momentarily silhouettes while defeating the Wicked Witch of the West with a water bucket. However, it seems that Dorothy will have a more significant part in the movie version, hinted by the sneak peeks of her and her silver slippers (originally silver boots) before the Wizard, as seen in the trailers so far.

It’s still uncertain just how significant her role will be, but speculation is growing as to who will play the character, since the actress cast in this role has not been revealed yet. Interestingly, some fans have suggested that Alisha Weir, a 15-year-old Irish actor/singer who starred in Matilda and Abigail, might be the lucky one. Intriguingly, she was spotted wearing silver shoes on the Wicked red carpet, which has led many to believe that she could potentially portray Dorothy Gale in these upcoming films.

The intriguing aspect of the Chu quote you provided lies in his prediction that the worlds of “Wicked” and “The Wizard of Oz” will overlap significantly in the upcoming movie. Given that “Wicked” revises its own history, it’s reasonable to expect that the climactic encounter between Dorothy and Elphaba could be deeper and more complex than we’ve previously understood. This added complexity only increases our anticipation for the second film.

It’s quite possible that everything we see is just a clever strategy to maintain excitement and prevent us from knowing the actual plot when the movie “Wicked: For Good” premieres in theaters on November 21, 2025.
