As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for both fashion and anime, I must say that I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming re-edition of the Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami collection! Having grown up watching anime and playing video games, these films have a special place in my heart.
To mark the re-release of the iconic Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami line, the French luxury brand is honoring the occasion by releasing remastered versions of Murakami’s anime shorts, “Superflat Monogram” (2003) and “Superflat First Love” (2009). This 20th anniversary project offers a retrospective view on two pieces that significantly shaped their artistic collaboration, showcasing the artist’s unique surrealist style and the vibrant visual universe birthed from their partnership.
In the story titled “Monogram,” a young girl finds herself mysteriously engulfed by an enchanting panda, propelling her into a lively LV realm where she embarks on a quest to recover her misplaced cellphone, much like the trendy pink flip phone showcased in a recent advertisement starring Zendaya. Six years later, we meet our heroine once more in “First Love,” as she re-embarks on this fantastical journey, only this time, she interacts with Louis Vuitton as a budding designer.
The initial movie showcases an old-school anime feel, whereas the second one is presented in a more three-dimensional, video game-esque manner. Both movies share a vibrant palette of colors and feature recurring characters, mirroring the dynamic composition of Murakami’s imagination by merging traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern pop culture references.
2025 kicks off with the global release of Louis Vuitton’s collaboration with Murakami, as pop-up stores unfurl their unique charm in seven extraordinary cities. For those unable to visit, both films – “Superflat Monogram” and “Superflat First Love” – will be accessible online. But for a truly immersive experience, don’t miss the cinematic screening of these masterpieces at the elegantly renovated Cinema Spazio Etoile in the heart of Rome.
