As a seasoned movie critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from blockbusters to indie films, and everything in between. The recent revelations about the alleged retaliation by director Justin Baldoni against Blake Lively are nothing short of shocking.
As a film aficionado, I’ve been following the ongoing discussion about Blake Lively’s 80-page lawsuit against Wayfarer Studios and director Justin Baldoni of “It Ends With Us.” The crux of her complaint revolves around two main issues: sexual harassment and retaliation. Today, let’s delve into the latter – the allegations that Mr. Baldoni and his team orchestrated a smear campaign against Lively, which includes astroturfing activities and tarnishing her reputation. Interestingly, Hailey Bieber has been mentioned in this context.
In Lively’s lawsuit against Wayfarer Studios owned by Baldoni, various text messages exchanged between the director and his PR team were presented as evidence. On page 8 of the complaint, published in its entirety by the New York Times, a screenshot of a message from Baldoni is included, which initiates a conversation thread labeled “X” and titled “Hailey Bieber’s history of bullying many women, not just Selena Gomez, throughout the years.” Following this message, the actor from “Jane the Virgin” wrote:
This is what we would need
In response, Jennifer Abel, a publicist working with Baldoni wrote:
Just now, during our recent break, I had a conversation with Melissa regarding the topics we covered last night, particularly in relation to social media and digital aspects.
She subsequently sent a message suggesting they concentrate on Reddit, TikTok, and Instagram. The text further mentioned that Lively would allegedly be “demolished” and “hidden away”.
Wayfarer, along with Mr. Baldoni, instructed Miss Nathan and her colleagues to proactively implement their ‘influence’ or ‘persuasion’ strategy as part of their counteraction effort.
For quite some time now, discussions about Hailey Bieber and her relationship with Selena Gomez, who was previously married to the same man, have sparked curiosity, rumors, and even criticism on various online platforms. This is the context that these texts are referring to.
After receiving a text from Melissa Nathan, a crisis management expert at The Agency Group, who suggested they could make any problem disappear but found it difficult to say so directly to Bieber, the texts concerning Bieber followed. She indicated that she would handle the situation firmly.
These leaked texts additionally mentioned noteworthy figures such as Taylor Swift, and they seemed to expose a supposed strategy aimed at tarnishing the image of Blake Lively while promoting her book “It Ends With Us“.
Following the submission of this complaint, Baldoni’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, described the allegations as “unfounded, excessive, and deliberately sensational with the aim of causing public harm.” Concurrently, several celebrities, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Feig, and the cast of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, have publicly expressed their support for Lively. It is worth mentioning that Lively’s colleagues on her project, It Ends With Us, such as author Colleen Hoover and co-stars Brandon Sklenar and Jenny Slate, have also voiced their backing for her.
Additionally, Justin Baldoni’s former publicist also filed a lawsuit against Jennifer Abel, her previous employee.
Currently, we’re keeping an eye on events as they unfold after the submission of this extensive lawsuit. A legal expert noted that there’s potential for the Civil Rights Department to intervene, and it appears Lively may have grounds for seeking compensation for financial losses.
As we learn more about how this legal situation develops, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
