As a lifelong fan of John Stamos and his heartwarming characters, I was absolutely floored when I learned that he almost played The Grinch in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” It’s mind-boggling to think about Jesse Katsopolis donning green fur instead of that iconic red suit.
Through his roles on the popular sitcom “Full House” and the acclaimed drama “ER,” John Stamos captivated audiences with cries of “Have Mercy!” However, it might surprise you to learn that this charming actor once auditioned for a role that eventually went to Jim Carrey – a part that would require him to portray a twisted character. Can you guess which iconic and sociopathic role Stamos almost played? The revelation will leave your mind reeling, just as it did mine.
In simpler terms, the 61-year-old actor, famous for his handsome features, almost hid his face under green fur. You might recognize him from sitcoms. In an interview with James Austin Johnson’s Grinch on the “Tis The Grinch Holiday” Podcast, he revealed that he nearly took on the role of Dr. Seuss’ villainous character. The popular actor shared the reason for turning down the part.
Hello there! Let me share something intriguing with you – a fact about myself you might not be aware of. Initially, I was cast in the role that eventually went to Jim Carrey in the movie we both know. Did you realize that? I even attended the makeup trial, but unfortunately, I turned out to have an allergy to all the prosthetics used.
It’s hard for me to wrap my head around the idea that in an alternate reality, I might have watched the same actor who played Jesse Katsopolis, brilliantly portrayed by Jim Carrey, sporting a devilish smile under green hair and makeup! This is just too mind-boggling for me. When you look at any scene of Jim Carrey as the villain in Whoville, it’s tough to conceive anyone else embodying the wild energy that he brought to the role, which earned him a Golden Globe. Yet, it’s intriguing to ponder what might have transpired differently.
It’s not surprising that John Stamos chose to withdraw from Ron Howard’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” considering his allergy to makeup. Many actors have faced similar challenges, where they undergo significant transformations for a role, only to end up unrecognizable. For example, an interesting tidbit about Tim Burton’s “Batman” is that Jack Nicholson was allergic to spirit gum, a substance used to apply prosthetics. As a result, the team had to find another method to create his chilling Joker smile. Similarly, John Rhys-Davies declined to reprise Gimli in “The Hobbit” due to his allergy to the harsh makeup he had previously worn.
From Jim Carrey’s most notable films, it becomes clear that the Ace Ventura star excels at making his characters come alive through precise physical expressions, emotional depth, and impeccable comedic delivery. However, donning prosthetics on his nose, ears, teeth, and even ears was no walk in the park for this talented Canadian actor. During an interview on The Graham Norton Show, the Majestic actor revealed that he often felt like he was being “entombed alive” each day, and enlisted the help of a CIA operative to endure the ordeal of the eight-hour makeup application process.
As a movie enthusiast, I’d say it like this: Previously on In Living Color, I was part of the crew. If given the chance to reprise my role as The Grinch, I’d insist on motion capture technology over traditional full-face makeup. You see, movies like Avatar and the latest Planet of the Apes series have shown us that actors don’t necessarily need heavy makeup to look indistinguishable from their digital counterparts. It’s a relief to know that such an extremely painful process as full-on makeup application can be avoided!
Despite that, I’m still amazed that John Stamos nearly brought his playful mischief to life as The Grinch in full green. Though the prosthetic makeup didn’t suit Stamos as well as it did Jim Carrey, we can only speculate about how he might have embodied the grumpy, Christmas-ruining character. I must confess, I’ll probably never stop wondering what John Stamos’ portrayal of the role would have been like compared to Carrey’s and whether it too would have earned acclaim.
For those interested in watching Jim Carrey’s portrayal of the grumpy green character, you can currently stream the movie “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” with a subscription to Peacock.
