As a devoted follower of streetwear and denim fashion, I can’t help but be captivated by the KITH’s Tokyo line’s latest collaboration with New Manual. Having spent countless hours pouring over vintage garments and immersing myself in the rich tapestry of Japanese denim culture, this capsule resonates deeply with me.
The collection’s focus on authenticity and craftsmanship is a testament to the painstaking attention to detail that both KITH Tokyo’s director Junya Matano and Yutaka Fujiwara have demonstrated throughout their respective careers. From the 1970s-inspired painter pants, which were directly inspired by an item worn by Matano himself, to the modernized reworking of Fujiwara’s classic 1930s cowboy jacket, each piece in this capsule is a labor of love that speaks to their shared passion for denim.
What I find most compelling about this collaboration is the personal connection between the two designers. Matano’s admission that he was drawn to Fujiwara’s work from the very first exhibition of New Manual, and his desire to collaborate with such a person someday, underscores the power of shared vision and mutual respect in creative partnerships.
In all honesty, I can’t help but feel a pang of envy towards those who will be able to snag a piece from this limited-edition capsule when it drops at KITH Tokyo on January 2, 2025 via lottery system. But hey, maybe by then I’ll have learned how to sew and can make my own version! Just kidding, I don’t think even the most dedicated denimhead could replicate this level of craftsmanship at home.
The collaboration between KITH’s Tokyo line and Yutaka Fujiwara’s denim brand New Manual marks their initial joint effort on a fresh, unified capsule collection for the very first time.
In Masaru Kasamatsu’s lookbook, the duo has showcased a collection inspired by denim and characterized by craftsmanship and authenticity. Each item in the collection was personally selected and conceptualized by one of the brand’s designers. The collection consists of two pieces: a pair of painter pants modeled after a 1970s vintage piece worn by Junya Matano, KITH Tokyo’s director, and a jacket that updates Fujiwara’s 1930s cowboy jacket design.

In a post on Instagram, Matano reminisced about his initial visit to the first exhibition of New Manual. He was captivated by every word Fujiwara used to describe the product and found himself yearning for all the items showcased. Since then, he harbored a dream of working together with Kith in collaboration with Fujiwara at some point in the future, but initially, he couldn’t express it. Check out the KITH x New Manual capsule collection featured in the lookbook above, which is set to be released through a lottery system at KITH Tokyo on January 2, 2025.
