As a seasoned movie buff who has witnessed countless cinematic masterpieces spanning decades, I must say that Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has undeniably left an indelible mark on my film-loving soul. The sheer audacity of releasing a vampire romance thriller during the holiday season was a stroke of genius that has paid off handsomely, as audiences flock to witness this unique retelling of the classic myth.
The finale of Nosferatu is nothing short of breathtaking, and I must confess that Bill Skarsgard‘s portrayal of Count Orlok in the gonzo sex scene with Lily-Rose Depp’s Ellen will forever be etched in my memory. It’s a testament to Skarsgard’s commitment to his craft that he endured the grueling process of wearing prosthetics and latex for hours on end, even as it resulted in a giant sweaty bubble on his stomach.
Nic Hoult, who has also borne the brunt of makeup and prosthetics while playing Beast in the X-Men films, was there to offer his support and compassion. As Skarsgard recounted on ReelBlend, Hoult’s gentle humor and kindness were a beacon of light during those long days on set.
All in all, Nosferatu is a must-see for any serious film enthusiast. Its unique blend of horror, romance, and the supernatural will undoubtedly leave you with a newfound appreciation for the genre. And as a little joke to lighten things up, I’ll leave you with this: I wonder if they’ll ever make a movie where Bill Skarsgard plays a vampire who can’t handle sweaty prosthetics… now that would be a real horror show!
One of the unexpected successes of this holiday season has been Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, a fresh take on the vampire legend featuring Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Hoult, and Bill Skarsgard in the leading role. I call it an “unexpected” success not because the film is expected to be poor in any way. On the contrary, our review of Nosferatu was incredibly positive, and Eggers is known for creating atmospheric, expansive productions. However, releasing a vampire romance thriller during the Christmas season might seem like an unusual move, but we’re pleasantly surprised – and excited – to see that audiences are eagerly going to theaters to watch it. Since its release, we can now discuss it openly.
Specifically, that gonzo finale.
We are about to get into spoilers for Nosferatu, so only proceed if you have seen the movie.
In Robert Eggers’ highly praised film, Count Orlok (played by Bill Skarsgard) and Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) ultimately give into their forbidden love, which was part of a strategy Ellen devised to expel Orlok from her territory and his curse. Essentially, the summoned vampire finds his long-awaited meal in Ellen, who called him in a dream many years ago. This surprising scene featuring Skarsgard as Nosferatu is truly captivating.
Alexander Skarsgard and Willem Dafoe recently joined TopMob’s ReelBlend podcast as special guests, discussing their experiences during the filming of “Nosferatu.” During our conversation, we inquired about Skarsgard’s makeup process, focusing on the sweat produced by the prosthetics he needed to wear to transform into Orlok. To which he replied:
Regarding sweating, it wasn’t on my face. I was entirely clad in latex from head to toe, with just my eyeballs and the soles of my feet exposed. For the final scene of the film, we shot multiple takes totaling 30 times without revealing too much about the ending. It required a lot of physical exertion, leaving me drained and sweating profusely. With no place for the sweat to go, it formed a large bubble on my abdomen that grew like a tumor. During breaks, they had to puncture it… And not just regular sweat, but also fake blood, sweat, and saliva were added, making quite a gory scene.
The scene between Ellen and Orlok is incredibly disturbing, a memory that lingers long after viewing. Interestingly enough, Nosferatu left quite an indelible impression on many aspects. For instance, the application of prosthetics, makeup, and latex was a unique challenge. Nicholas Hoult, who played Beast in the X-Men series, can attest to this lengthy process, having gone through it for years. He recalls the intricacies involved, and was supportive during his Nosferatu co-star’s difficult time.
As Bill Skarsgard told ReelBlend:
As a person who has had my fair share of uncomfortable experiences while filming intense scenes, I can truly appreciate the compassion and kindness shown by Tom Holland during our time on set. On the initial days of shooting the long scene where his character, Thomas, was introduced to Orlok, he would frequently check in on me with a friendly “Hey, Bill…” between takes, asking if I needed water or any assistance. His empathy towards my discomfort was evident, and it made a significant difference in making the experience less daunting. Despite my initial hesitation when he asked if I wanted to use water (a question that brought back memories of similar situations), I couldn’t help but feel grateful for his thoughtfulness. Having gone through the same process himself, Tom knew how challenging it could be and took the time to make things easier for me. His sweet demeanor left a lasting impression on me and made our working relationship more enjoyable and professional.
After years of immersing myself in the world of film and theater, I can confidently say that Nosferatu is one of those timeless classics that will never lose its charm. The Orlok character, portrayed by the brilliant Max Schreck, stands out as a testament to the power of acting. It’s one of the key reasons why this movie has been so well-received over the decades. I had the pleasure of listening to Bill Skarsgard and Willem Dafoe discuss their thoughts on Nosferatu in the ReelBlend podcast, and I couldn’t agree more with their sentiments about its lasting impact. It truly is a masterpiece that has left an indelible mark on the horror genre, and it serves as a reminder of the magic that can be created when talented artists come together to bring a story to life.
Be sure not to miss watching “Nosferatu” at the cinema. If it appeals to your taste, you might want to mark down the schedule for our collection of upcoming horror films that are due to be released over the coming months.
