As a film enthusiast with a penchant for international cinema and a disdain for the rom-com genre, I find myself constantly seeking new, captivating stories that transcend geographical boundaries. Recently, I’ve found myself growing increasingly frustrated with Netflix’s Top 10 list due to its overemphasis on live sports events.
I understand the appeal of sports content and its massive viewership, but as someone who would rather watch a foreign film festival marathon than a football game, it feels like my preferences are being drowned out by the gridiron glory. The current state of the Top 10 list is reminiscent of trying to find a needle in a haystack filled with sports highlights – not an enjoyable experience for this cinephile.
However, I have a simple solution that might just be the answer to my prayers: Create a separate Top 10 Sports list. This way, fans of WWE and NFL can enjoy their favorite content without cluttering up the main list, while those seeking new TV shows and movies can continue to explore with ease.
In jest, I’d like to say that if Netflix doesn’t heed my call for a separate sports list, I might just start my own streaming service called “Streamless,” where viewers can enjoy an uninterrupted flow of subtitled films without any pesky sports popping up in the way. But until then, I’ll keep crossing my fingers (and toes) that Netflix takes this suggestion seriously and gives us film lovers a fighting chance at finding our next cinematic masterpiece.
As a long-time subscriber of Netflix, I’ve experienced my fair share of streaming issues, and it was particularly frustrating when I tried to watch the highly anticipated fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson at the end of 2024. The buffering problems were rampant, leaving many fans, myself included, feeling frustrated and disappointed. However, with Netflix branching out into live events such as NFL games and wrestling, it’s encouraging to see that they are addressing these technical difficulties. That being said, as someone who is not particularly interested in sports, I would love to see a greater emphasis on other genres of content moving forward. For instance, I’d love to see more original movies and TV shows from independent filmmakers, or perhaps a greater focus on documentaries that explore a wider range of topics. Ultimately, I believe that by catering to a broader audience, Netflix can continue to thrive as a streaming platform and remain competitive in an increasingly crowded market.
When searching for fresh content on Netflix, I don’t usually start with the recommendations provided to me initially. If I did, I’d end up watching a endless series of romantic comedies such as Lindsay Lohan’s “Our Little Secret“. Instead, I often discover new content by examining what’s popular on Netflix in both the U.S. and internationally, and then exploring the upcoming releases based on that information.
As someone who spends a significant amount of time watching TV shows across various genres, I must say that Netflix’s Top 10 list is usually quite helpful for me. It often features content that appears on both U.S. and global lists, giving me an idea of what will likely be renewed or recommended to others. Furthermore, it offers a wide array of options in different TV genres, catering to my diverse taste in entertainment.
However, this week has been somewhat unusual for me, as the top two spots on Netflix’s Top 10 list have been dedicated to NFL Christmas GameDay content. To be honest, I don’t typically watch sports, especially during the holiday season, but I decided to give it a try. As a lifelong bookworm who prefers stories with complex characters and intricate plots, my preference leans more towards fictional series rather than live sporting events. Nevertheless, I appreciate Netflix for catering to various preferences and providing choices that may appeal to different viewers like me.
So where am I going with this?
Why Netflix’s Top 10 TV List Should Change With Live Sports
As a movie enthusiast, I prefer my screen-time to be filled with pre-recorded content rather than live TV events that have already unfolded on platforms like Netflix. While it’s undeniably impressive that the NFL Christmas day games attracted over 40 million hours of viewership each, and approximately 14 million households tuning in for the Ravens vs Texans game, as well as around the same number for the Chiefs vs Steelers at the time they made Netflix’s Top 10 list, my personal preference leans towards rewatching or discovering fresh movies instead.
In my personal experience, I find myself gravitating more towards original shows rather than sports content. While it’s undeniable that many people enjoy sports and there might be some overlap between those who watch sports and those who watch original programming, I can confidently say that I am not one of them.
To be honest, I have little to no interest in sports, especially live sporting events that took place several days ago. My life experiences have led me to appreciate the artistry, storytelling, and emotional depth that original shows offer far more than the thrill of watching a game or match. For me, the world of entertainment lies in the realm of captivating narratives, compelling characters, and thought-provoking themes. That’s where I find my passion and connection, not on the field or court.
As a sports enthusiast who has spent countless hours glued to my TV screen cheering for my favorite teams, I firmly believe that Netflix is making a smart move by increasing their live sporting events offerings. It seems evident to me, based on my personal observations and experiences, that sports are incredibly popular among a significant portion of Netflix’s user base. In contrast to niche shows like “Black Doves,” the appeal of sports doesn’t require any marketing or promotion; their popularity is self-evident. I can only imagine the excitement that live sports events will bring to the streaming platform, and I eagerly await seeing more sports content on Netflix’s Top 10 TV list.
It’s clear that Netflix’s Top lists feature a broad range of content, including scripted originals, sports, documentaries, and stand-up specials. However, not every title will pique my interest.
Additionally, I understand that Netflix currently isn’t broadcasting many live events, but this is still the case for now. With only two live events appearing on their Top 10 list, there are numerous other options available within the Netflix Top 10 list to cater to a wide variety of content preferences. As Netflix expands its focus towards live content to boost advertising revenue, I eagerly anticipate a solution that appeals to fans of both sports and non-sports events.
One Way To Fix The Top 10 List Issue
As a dedicated film enthusiast with a soft spot for sports, I can’t help but feel that my streaming service of choice could take things to the next level by introducing a distinct Top 10 list tailored specifically towards sports content. In my opinion, this would be an intuitive and user-friendly solution to cater to diverse interests without overwhelming those who are not sports enthusiasts.
Currently, I often find myself sifting through countless options, with the latest season of “Stranger Things” intermingling with the most recent WWE matches. While both types of content have their merits, it can be frustrating to navigate the platform and find what I’m truly interested in at a glance.
By separating sports from other genres, viewers like myself will no longer have to wade through unrelated content when looking for our favorite sports programs. Similarly, those who are more interested in original series or new scripted content can easily access that category without being bogged down by sports-related content. This separation would greatly enhance user experience and foster a more personalized streaming journey for all.
As a film enthusiast, I’ve noticed that it might take some patience before Netflix accumulates sufficient sports or live content to fully populate a Top 10 list. I understand that changes won’t happen overnight, but I’m hoping for an assurance that this format has been beneficial in unearthing series less likely to be axed after just one season, given Netflix’s reputation for canceling content soon after its debut.
starting from next week, the WWE’s Monday Night RAW will no longer air on cable and instead move to Netflix, beginning January 6th. This trend of sports moving to streaming platforms may continue. Currently, it seems that the Top 10 list might not be a major focus for Netflix, but I hope it becomes significant in the future as the world of entertainment continues to evolve, regardless of personal preferences regarding live sports on streaming services.
