I’m one of many in Hollywood mourning the loss of Jeff Baena, a remarkable director, who took his life last Friday at the young age of 47.
Baena served as both writer and director on several independent films such as “Life After Beth,” “The Little Hours,” “Horse Girl,” and “Spin Me Round.” Frequently, he collaborated with his long-time partner, Aubrey Plaza. The couple tied the knot in 2020, having been a duo for ten years prior to their marriage.
Over the weekend, friends like Pally and others who were acquainted with Baena began posting on social media platforms, reminiscing about him, following the announcement of his passing that occurred early on Saturday morning.
On Sundays, Pally posted on Instagram, “Jeff Baena hailed from Miami as a kind, Jewish lad. Known for his collaborative spirit and guidance, he was also the most tenacious basketball player with an unconventional jump shot.”
(The aim here is to maintain the original meaning but use slightly different words and sentence structures for variety.)
The performer, who appeared with Plaza in Baena’s movies “Joshy”, “The Little Hours” and “Life After Beth”, praised Baena as a “skilled director with exceptional discernment and creativity.
Pally described him as someone who brought people together, nurtured opportunities, and always knew the best places to eat, no matter the location. He was an exceptionally hospitable individual with an almost unsettling welcoming nature, a walking film encyclopedia, but above all, he was my friend.
Friendly accolades were extended by the individual known for contributing to films such as the “Sonic the Hedgehog” series, TV shows like “Knuckles” and “The Mindy Project,” and various projects including “Dirty Grandpa,” “The To Do List,” and “A.C.O.D.” This person acknowledged Baena for his genuine authenticity, not just in his professional endeavors but also in his personal life.
In his role as a director, Jeff consistently aimed for authenticity. He ensured nothing appeared, sounded, or felt contrived, reflecting his genuine character. You could always trust that Jeff was honest with you, as truthfulness was his hallmark.
To conclude, Pally expressed that he was deeply saddened for his friend Aubrey and the Baena family, as well as those who worked with him on set, visited his home, or were connected to him in any way. He thanked Jeff for having faith in him, and may his memory be a source of comfort.
Molly Shannon, who appeared in four movies directed by Baena (namely “Life After Beth”, “The Little Hours”, “Horse Girl” and “Spin Me Round”), shared a series of photos featuring herself alongside Baena and other crew members from those productions, both on and off the set. She accompanied these images with a broken heart emoticon as a caption.
Shannon added their thoughts to Pally’s tribute, saying, “Adam, this is the finest tribute I’ve seen, and it perfectly captures Jeff’s essence. His films were remarkably original, a testament to his exceptional talent as a writer and director. He had an extraordinary visual sense, with a remarkable eye for detail. To top it all off, he was kind-hearted and considerate, often bringing people together (mostly in Italy!). His work continues to inspire, while his memory will forever remain vivid.
As a fellow gamer and fan, I too paid tribute to the late great Baena on my Insta-feed. Just like Alison Brie, who graced multiple films he directed, I shared a few snaps of us together, symbolizing our bond with a broken heart emoji.
Both Searchlight Pictures and Sundance paid tribute to Baena on their respective social media platforms.
Read on to see how Hollywood is remembering Baena.
