It’s been a while since we last saw an exciting TV crossover, but this week, two popular shows – “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Abbott Elementary” – are finally coming together for their first of two highly anticipated episodes. The 2025 TV schedule is looking pretty good! In the sneak peek, we can see the experienced cast members from “It’s Always Sunny” having a hilarious time with the teachers and students at Abbott Elementary, although one character from the Paddy’s Pub gang had to be kept away from the kids. I’m not surprised in the least!
For a while now, a humorous concept combining two Philadelphia-based sitcoms has been brewing. It’s unlikely that any characters from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” would be eligible to work in a school. Yet, when asked by Rolling Stone which characters she’d like to retain permanently on “Abbott Elementary,” showrunner and lead actress Quinta Brunson mentioned Sweet Dee and surprisingly, Danny DeVito’s character Frank Reynolds, but with a minor condition:
Initially, I contemplated including Frank as well, for he’s such an entertaining character to interact with in this universe. There were numerous instances where I wished we could capture a child’s genuine reaction to him, but unfortunately, time didn’t permit. We had a concept where a child simply observed him, but he’s incredibly engaging to react to. Our series primarily revolves around characters’ reactions to the cameras. However, in our world, we had to ensure Frank stayed away from the children due to certain reasons. But oh, is he ever a laugh riot!
Indeed, Frank and his children often lead to turbulent situations. From what we’ve observed of his parenting style, it’s clear that he may not be the best role model for young ones. His antics on “It’s Always Sunny” are quite infamous and serve as a memorable aspect of the series. Frank, played by Danny DeVito, is always hatching schemes, often resorting to questionable and immoral methods to achieve his goals. His actions are usually driven by self-interest, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he were to exploit the students at Abbott for his own purposes, given the chance.
In one of the upcoming episodes, the storyline has the Paddy’s Pub group offering their time at Abbott Elementary School, although the reasons behind their unusual decision remain unclear. The initial episode will present the day’s events as seen through the eyes of the Abbott characters, adhering to the traditional mockumentary style. Later on, viewers will get a glimpse of the crossover event from the viewpoint of the Sunny group, making for an interesting contrast in character portrayals. This setup promises a more candid look at the Abbott team.
The show “It’s Always Sunny” isn’t for sensitive viewers, as its creators refuse to soften its shock-value approach to cater to family audiences. Quinta Brunson and co-creator Rob McElhenney will advise some “Abbott” viewers to avoid the FX series due to its explicit content. The show has always been unapologetic about pushing boundaries, with its main characters being deeply morally flawed, particularly Frank.
After considering everything, it’s this individual who, on one occasion, initiated a sweatshop using child labor and, in another instance, falsely claimed to be his adult daughter Dee’s fiance to gain access to his ex-wife’s funds. This leaves me questioning what kind of activities Frank engages in at Abbott that cause the faculty to believe the children should keep their distance from him.
I’m particularly excited to watch how the characters intertwine their storylines this season on It’s Always Sunny, even though I have concerns about the faculty at Abbott. The Sunny gang has a tendency to create chaos wherever they go, but perhaps some positive outcomes will arise from all this commotion. For instance, maybe Barbara or Melissa will finally teach Charlie to read. This is Season 17 for It’s Always Sunny, and amazingly, its cast continues to be the most unpredictable on television. Here’s hoping we don’t see Frank naked and stuck in the playground equipment again!
I’m genuinely uncertain about what lies ahead, but I’m definitely excited to discover it by tuning into Abbott Elementary this Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC. You can also stream the episode the next day with a Hulu subscription.
