In essence, historically, the Golden Globes don’t often predict winners at the Oscars because the two awarding bodies are separate and tend to favor different films and actors in significant categories. However, I’m hoping there will be a coincidence this year in the Best Actress category, as I really want Demi Moore to win the top accolade for her performance in writer/director Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance“.
During tonight’s Golden Globe Awards, a standout moment occurred when Demi Moore was called up on stage to receive a prestigious award for her outstanding work in the 2024 film that TopMob staff deemed the best of the year. Her performance was remarkable, and during her acceptance speech, she shared that reading the script had persuaded her not to retire from acting. In her own words, Moore expressed this as follows: “Reading the script changed my mind about retiring as an actor.
A few years back, I considered whether I had achieved everything I was meant to and perhaps my journey was over. However, at a time when I was feeling particularly low, an extraordinary, daring, courageous, and unconventional script titled “The Substance” appeared on my desk. The universe seemed to be telling me that there was still more for me to do. I am incredibly thankful to Coralie [Fargeat] for giving me the opportunity to portray this character. For Margaret [Qualley], for being my counterpart, a vital part of me that I couldn’t have managed without – for watching out for me.
More About The Substance!
The Director of ‘The Substance’ Talks About the Significant Discussions with Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley Regarding the Film’s Intense Prosthetics and Nudity in the Body Horror Movie.
Demi Moore has been a well-known figure for many years, but her portrayal of Elizabeth Sparkle in “The Substance” stands out as unlike any other role she’s played. Her acting in this film is truly remarkable. After being fired from her TV hosting job on her 50th birthday, the character embodies the self-hatred that society instills in women through unrealistic beauty standards. The performance is a powerful blend of anger and sorrow, perfectly capturing the struggles and emotions of the character.
As a movie enthusiast, I was deeply moved by the scene where Elizabeth Sparkle found herself trapped within the confines of her own apartment, a prisoner to her crippling self-doubt. Tonight, that powerful portrayal earned her an award, and I can only hope that in a few short months, it will be joined on her metaphorical mantelpiece by the prestigious Oscar, which she’s been nominated for (this year’s ceremony is set for March 2nd).
In this movie, The Substance, Demi Moore’s acting stands out and should not be overlooked or forgotten. This film is one of the bravest and most stunning examples of body horror in recent times. Whether it’s her giving birth to a younger, supposedly “perfect” version of herself through her back or enduring the consequences of her counterpart misusing the title software, Moore’s performance is exceptionally sophisticated and incredibly impressive.
If you missed watching “The Substance” on New Year’s Eve, it’s absolutely not too late! In my opinion, it was the standout film among the 140 new releases I watched in 2024. You can currently stream it on Mubi, or alternatively, rent or buy the digital version.
