Despite not receiving much recognition in terms of awards for his portrayal of Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sebastian Stan, aged 42, has been applauded for his role in the movie “A Different Man“. Directed by Aaron Schimberg, this A24 production tells the story of a struggling actor with neurofibromatosis who decides to undergo a significant medical transformation. Released on September 20, 2024, this darkly comedic psychological thriller has been well-received by both audiences and critics, and last night, it brought Stan his first Golden Globe award.
On January 5th, Stan attended the 82nd Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. He was nominated in two categories: Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for “A Different Man,” and Best Actor in a Drama for his role as Donald Trump in “The Apprentice.” Although he didn’t win the Drama category (which went to Adrien Brody for “The Brutalist”), he triumphed over strong competition in the Musical or Comedy category, securing the award. Overwhelmed, anxious, and emotional, Stan stepped onto the stage to give his speech, during which he emphasized the significance of representation in films, particularly concerning disabilities.
Let’s put an end to our unease concerning disabilities and abnormalities. It’s high time we embrace them as part of everyday life, and foster acceptance within ourselves, and in our kids too. A way to achieve this is by persistently promoting inclusive narratives. Creating this movie was challenging […] These topics are difficult but these films are authentic and crucial. We can’t shy away or turn a blind eye.
Let’s stop feeling uncomfortable around people with disabilities or unusual appearances. It’s important we learn to accept them, teach our kids the same, and one way to do that is by supporting movies that include everyone. Making this movie was tough […] These are hard topics but these films are real and necessary, so we can’t avoid them.
By making these changes in language, the original text becomes more approachable and easier for a wider audience to understand and connect with.
Besides Jesse Eisenberg for “A Real Pain”, Hugh Grant for “Heretic”, Gabriel LaBelle for “Saturday Night”, Jesse Plemons for “Kinds of Kindness”, and Glen Powell for “Hit Man”, were also nominated. To note, this marked Stan’s first Golden Globes award, with his second nomination overall. In the year 2023, he was contending for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film for his performance as Tommy Lee in the biographical drama “Pam & Tommy”, but the title went to Evan Peters for his role in the Netflix sensation “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story“.
What’s Next for Sebastian Stan?
Following his appearances in “A Different Man” and “The Apprentice”, Stan is all set to step back into the role of Bucky Barnes for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, “Thunderbolts”. This movie boasts a star-studded cast that includes David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Scheduled to hit theaters on May 2, it serves as the 36th installment in the ongoing series and concludes Phase 5, paving the way for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” to launch Phase 6.
After his role in “Thunderbolts”, Stan is slated to star in the horror thriller “Let the Evil Go West”, directed by Christian Tafdrup of “Speak No Evil”. This movie revolves around a railroad worker who unearths a fortune under unsettling conditions, only to be haunted by terrifying visions and supernatural occurrences that lead him towards insanity. A release date has yet to be announced, but in the meantime, you can catch Stan’s award-winning performance in “A Different Man”, currently available on all VOD platforms, and premiering on Max on January 17th.
