It seems unlikely that the FX series “Shōgun” will return to our TV screens by 2025, and I’m completely okay with that. With the recent Golden Globe winner securing four awards at this weekend’s high-profile event, fans like us should be brimming with excitement as we await its uncertain return.
However, there’s fresh information regarding the continuation of Season 2 that has us even more thrilled. During their conversation with Variety, executive producers Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks shed some light on the progress of Shõgun‘s Season 2 and 3 production. While Kondo remained somewhat reserved about revealing details, she admitted, “I’m not sure what we can disclose.” In contrast, Marks provided a tantalizing hint with his statement:
We’re about six weeks from the end of the writers room.
Last night saw some breathtaking additions to the trophy collection of Shōgun, adding to its impressive tally of 18 Emmy awards from 2024. The adaptation of James Clavell’s acclaimed novel, “Asian Saga,” won the accolade for Best Drama Series. Moreover, Anna Sawai, Hiroyui Sanada, and Tadanobu Asano each received individual honors in the same category, being named Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor respectively.
It’s worth pointing out that the report under discussion doesn’t indicate an official go-ahead for more seasons of the popular FX drama. Yet, I believe a single reading of the writers’ work could set things in motion. The 2025 Golden Globe awards victories are likely to rekindle memories of the first season’s greatness among fans, and there’s a strong possibility that new viewers might be drawn in following this round of wins.
My initial hesitation about where future seasons of “Shōgun” might head has always been somewhat balanced. However, as I hear hints from Hiroyuki Sanada himself regarding possible storylines for Lord Toranaga, my faith grows that if we do get Seasons 2 and 3, it won’t merely be due to accolades or viewership ratings. Instead, it seems the creative team has solid plans in place.
The kind of work Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks are doing can help move things towards production, but there’s still a chance it could hit a wall. Ultimately, the fate of the story depends on its quality and whether the Shōgun writer’s room considers it worth telling. Given this, fans should be all the more eager to learn if the ongoing tale of Lord Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne gets the green light.
Currently, the acclaimed series “Shōgun” is available as a completed season on Hulu. If you’re yearning to revisit this captivating journey or if you’ve managed to avoid spoilers up until now, you can stream all ten episodes by subscribing to Hulu.
