Last Sunday evening, the 82nd edition of the prestigious Golden Globes was broadcast, and as usual, it was filled with unexpected wins and shocking moments. The event was emceed by Nikki Glaser, ensuring an abundance of humor in the presence of a glittering crowd of stars. This grand night showcased some of the most anticipated movies from 2024, such as “Dune: Part Two”, “Wicked”, “A Complete Unknown”, “The Substance”, and many more. Regardless of their box office success or critical acclaim, the nominations for this year’s Golden Globes were undeniably deserving. With a staggering box office revenue of $714.4 million against a production budget of $190 million, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi masterpiece, “Dune: Part Two”, left viewers spellbound and received numerous praises from critics.
The movie “Wicked” is still playing in cinemas and has already earned $681.2 million at the box office, surpassing its production budget of $150 million. Given that it won for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement on Sunday night, it’s expected these figures will keep growing. However, a film’s box office success isn’t everything. Movies like “The Brutalist”, “Anora”, “September 5”, and “Emilie Pérez” may not have sold many tickets, but they are among the best films of 2024, with some yet to be widely released. Despite every nominated film and performance deserving recognition, there was one nominee whose loss at this year’s Golden Globes was particularly disappointing. Every awards ceremony has its upsets, but one overlooked contender left many hearts heavy at the 2024 Golden Globes.
Who Are the 82nd Golden Globes Nominees?
This year’s nominees showcased exceptional performances across the board, with the following films earning a Best Picture nomination: The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Nickel Boys, and September 5 (in the Drama category). On the other hand, Anora, Challengers, Emilie Pérez, A Real Pain, The Substance, and Wicked were all nominated for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy. Notable performances from these films include Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce, and Felicity Jones in The Brutalist, Mikey Madison and Yura Borisov in Anora, Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini in Conclave, and Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, and Karla Sofía Gascón in Emilia Pérez.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were rightfully nominated for their outstanding performances in Wicked, while Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley captivated viewers with their performances in The Substance. However, many other remarkable performances also earned nominations, even though their respective films didn’t get a nod for Best Picture. These include Angelina Jolie in Maria, Nicole Kidman in Babygirl, Kate Winslet in Lee, and Amy Adams in Nightbitch, as well as Colman Domingo in Sing Sing, Jesse Plemons in Kinds of Kindness, Glen Powell in Hit Man, and Sebastian Stan in A Different Man.
In the year 2024, Dune: Part Two was among the most significant films, but surprisingly, it only received nominations in two categories. Due to its release being over a year ago, it has sadly slipped from public attention, despite the extraordinary acting of Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. However, they were both recognized for their roles in different movies: Chalamet was nominated for portraying Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, whereas Zendaya was acknowledged for her electrifying performance in Challengers.
‘Anora’ Was Completely Snubbed
Despite being nominated in five categories – Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress (Mikey Madison), and Best Actor (Yura Borisov) – Anora left the Golden Globes without a single award, an unexpected turn of events given its widespread acclaim as one of the year’s finest films.
Without a doubt, one of the most poignant moments of the night was Anora‘s performance, which could potentially earn accolades as the awards season progresses. Despite the fact that the Golden Globes haven’t always been a reliable predictor of the final outcome, Anora still holds a strong possibility to receive the recognition it truly deserves.
Who Were This Year’s Other Golden Globe Winners and Surprises?
This year’s winners were largely anticipated, as predicted. The film “The Brutalist” bagged the Best Picture – Drama award, and Emilie Pérez won Best Picture – Musical or Comedy. Adrien Brody triumphed in the Best Actor category for his role in “The Brutalist”, Sebastian Stan received recognition for his performance in “A Different Man”, Kieran Culkin was awarded for his role in “A Real Pain”, and Zoe Saldaña took home the trophy for her outstanding acting in “Emilia Pérez”. Brady Corbet secured the Best Director title for “The Brutalist”, while Peter Straughan won Best Screenplay for “Conclave”.
Despite Anora’s unexpected losses, Sunday night’s ceremony held a few delightful surprises. For instance, I was thrilled to witness Demi Moore clinch her first-ever Golden Globe for The Substance, and Fernanda Torres’ triumph in I’m Still Here, a role initially thought to be Nicole Kidman’s in Babygirl. Regrettably, Anora was overlooked, but the evening was still unforgettable.
