Golden Globes Reportedly Want Nikki Glaser as “Long Term” Host

After Nikki Glaser‘s well-received stint as host at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, there’s speculation that the producers want her back for another round. While the Golden Globes usually garner attention for winners such as Emilia Perez and The Brutalist, and notable absences like Anora and Challengers, many felt this year’s show was an improvement over the previous one, where comedian Jo Koy struggled with his performance due to a string of poorly timed jokes and attempts to blame the writers. Comedian Nikki Glaser, renowned for her work on the Comedy Central Roast, was a breath of fresh air for many, providing just the right touch the ceremony needed after years of controversy. It seems that the Golden Globe Awards producers may have found a formula for success and are hoping to replicate it with Nikki Glaser again.

After the Golden Globe Awards, executive producer Glenn Weiss shared his thoughts with Variety about the event. When asked if Tina Fey might return to host next year, Weiss expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We truly had an excellent experience with her, and I believe she would excel in this role long-term.” Regarding any discussions they’ve had with Fey about returning, Weiss hinted, “Maybe! I can’t make any official announcements. However, as a show producer and director, she really found her groove here, and it worked wonderfully for this event. I would be thrilled to see it continue.” Weiss also discussed what made Fey such an exceptional Golden Globes host by saying:

In my opinion, Nikki knocked it out of the park! She’s put in a tremendous amount of effort and preparation for this role. Over the past couple of weeks, she’s been rehearsing material at various clubs, often performing four or five shows a night, and has been working diligently on this since November. Her dedication and attention to detail are commendable. Not only is she well-prepared, but she’s also in tune with the current trends in our industry. She’s quick to adapt and respond to what’s happening around her, making her an exceptional host.

The Golden Globes are known for their lively atmosphere, not being overly formal or stiff. They aim to be relaxed, fun, and a bit of a party. Nikki’s laid-back demeanor aligns perfectly with the spirit of this event. I believe she excelled in her role last night.

Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes didn’t typically have hosts until relatively recently. The event was hostless until its 39th edition in 1982 when Robert Preston and Linda Gray shared hosting duties. For a period spanning from 1996 to 2009, there were no hosts. However, since the start of the 2010s, they’ve been trying to include a host more frequently. Comedian Ricky Gervais has hosted the most Golden Globe awards ceremonies with five appearances in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2020. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have teamed up as co-hosts four times, during the events in 2013, 2014, 2015, and most recently in 2021.

Nikki Glaser Is the Perfect Host for the Golden Globes

In my humble opinion as a movie critic, Goldderby’s performance at the Golden Globes could signal a fresh chapter for this prestigious awards show, potentially paving the way for her to be the enduring emcee and iconic figurehead of future ceremonies, resonating with a new wave of enthusiastic viewers. Moreover, she made history by becoming the solitary female stand-up comedian to ever host the Golden Globes.

Glaser was an audacious selection, considering her comedic style is somewhat more daring than what’s traditionally associated with awards shows. However, this risk proved to be a shrewd move, infusing the ceremony with a contemporary edge and maintaining its relevance in today’s cultural landscape. Despite not taking home the Best Performance in a Stand-Up Comedy or Television award, which was won by Ali Wong, Glaser undeniably stole the spotlight that night.

For quite some time, it seems that Glaser will consistently grace the Golden Globes stage. In contrast, the Academy Awards have faced difficulties finding a suitable host for over a decade. While figures like Bob Hope and Billy Crystal brought excitement to the ceremonies in the past, recent hosts such as Jimmy Kimmel haven’t managed to create the same level of audience enthusiasm. The search for the next big name to lead the Academy Awards has been unsuccessful and even chaotic, resulting in three consecutive years without a host from 2019 to 2021.

It’s likely that Conan O’Brien will deliver just as many chuckles at the 97th Academy Awards as Glaser did at the Golden Globes. We’ll see if that’s true on March 2nd.
