Matt Reeves Says “We’ll See” Regarding ‘The Batman’s Potential DCU Status

The movie “Batman,” directed by Matt Reeves, has already gained recognition as one of the top superhero films ever made due to its hard-hitting crime storyline that distinguishes it from other genre entries. Instead of focusing on the fantastical aspects of the original material, this adaptation presents a more realistic portrayal of the Dark Knight, with Robert Pattinson bringing a particularly vulnerable dimension to the character. Despite this, fans are still discussing his potential inclusion in James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe, which recently introduced its own Batman in “Creature Commandos.” Although it has been clarified that Reeves’ crime saga stands alone from the DCU, the talented director leaves open the possibility for future collaborations.

During an interaction with Josh Horowitz at the Golden Globes, Reeves was inquired about the present state of “The Batman Part II” and his opinion on the likelihood of Pattinson’s character merging with the DCU. Whilst Reeves encourages fans that the “The Batman” sequel is progressing smoothly, hinting at an unanticipated fresh narrative, he remains uncertain about a multiverse collaboration. For him, incorporating “The Batman” into the DCU “really hinges on whether it aligns logically,” and at this point, he’s more invested in the quality of the sequel rather than its potential within the DCU. However, he adopts a “watch and wait” stance regarding the entire scenario.

“What the future brings, I can’t really tell you… we’ll have to see where that goes.”

Reeves appears to be the most forthcoming about potentially blending the realms of The Batman and the freshly minted DCU. While his primary focus is undeniably crafting the best sequel for The Batman Part II, it’s intriguing to learn that those shaping DC’s upcoming ventures are choosing to keep possibilities open rather than prematurely shutting them down, allowing events to unfold organically.

‘The Batman Part II’ is Well On its Way

Currently, “The Batman” and its spinoff series, “The Penguin,” are set within an alternate universe called Elseworlds, distinct from the DC Universe. Director James Gunn has shown interest in exploring stories beyond his own cinematic realm, focusing on Reeves’ franchise. Thus, fans should watch out for “The Batman Part II” as a self-contained project, separate from other DC films. The eagerly anticipated sequel has sparked concerns due to its delay since its initial release in 2022, and those fears intensified with the news of a one-year pushback in its release date. However, production for “The Batman Part II” is set to commence around summer 2025.

In spite of some challenges in the production of The Batman Part II, the universe continues to thrive. Just yesterday, The Penguin from the series won a Golden Globe Award. Interestingly, the HBO show was initially marketed as a miniseries and is currently being awarded during awards season under that label. However, during the awards ceremony, showrunner Lauren LeFranc hinted at potential discussions for a second season. With the delay of The Batman sequel until 2027, many fans are eagerly anticipating another season featuring The Penguin. Yet, it might be challenging due to Season 1 being designed as a direct lead-up to Part II. Nevertheless, it’s evident that Reeves’ crime saga, amid the rapid growth of the DCU, is holding its ground and moving forward steadily.
