One Of Shooter McGavin’s Best Happy Gilmore Moments Came About Because Christopher McDonald Was Trying To Improv And Completely Blanked

Back in 2025, when Happy Gilmore 2 finally graces our screens, it’ll have been close to three decades since the original film made its debut. The timeless comedy from the ’90s remains one of the decade’s finest, and that’s largely thanks to its exceptional cast who truly shone. One standout moment was Christopher McDonald‘s portrayal of the arrogant Shooter McGavin, a role he brought to life with some hilarious scenes and dialogues. It appears one of Shooter’s best moments came about as a result of McDonald attempting to improvise, but instead found himself momentarily lost in thought.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I recently had the pleasure of chatting with The Movie Dweeb about Adam Sandler’s eagerly anticipated sequel focusing on golf. In a YouTube post, Christopher McDonald, the star of Hacks, reminisced about a legendary exchange between his character McGavin and Gilmore in the film. This memorable scene showcases their heated golf bet, with McGavin confidently asserting (“I devour trash like you for breakfast”), only for Gilmore to have a sharp comeback ready. McDonald disclosed that this was the initial scene he shot for the movie, and his off-the-cuff addition, which initially seemed underwhelming to him, turned out to be a perfect fit.

…And I was supposed to just walk away, but, I turned around and went, ‘No!’

To put it plainly, the line was a huge success and played a significant part in shaping Shooter McGavin’s character. The actor’s intuition proved spot-on, as his dialogue effectively added humor and tension to the movie. I still maintain that he was outstanding in the role, and even back then, he knew it. He confided that he understood his portrayal of Shooter would become iconic because people recognized him from the character wherever he went.

In a recent chat, the former star from “The Watcher” elaborated further on his initial mistake of only providing a single-word answer. He also shared reasons behind accepting this limitation:

It seems he struggled to think of something on the spot, which, in turn, gave off an air of being spoiled and somewhat arrogant, reminiscent of a privileged member of an exclusive golf club.

It’s understandable why Christopher McDonald didn’t add more comedic elements to the scene, as he correctly points out that it didn’t require anything extra. In fact, McGavin embodies the classic “entitled country club boy” stereotype so well that viewers might find themselves rolling their eyes at least once per scene. The actor from Grease 2 was an excellent pick to play such a selfish and immature character, and I’m eagerly anticipating his return in the sequel. (By the way, Adam Sandler recently dropped a significant teaser over the holidays, so keep an eye out for it!)

Let’s observe whether Shooter McGavin will deliver any impressive scenes comparable to those in the 1996 original, a film some believe is Adam Sandler’s finest work. I can hardly wait to find out if we’ll get another hit like that one, especially with Sandler, Christopher McDonald, and other talented cast members involved. I’m optimistic about the outcome.

You can currently stream “Happy Gilmore” on Video-On-Demand platforms. As of now, no official release date has been set for its sequel. However, remember to keep your Netflix account active if you wish to watch it.
