2025 TV lineup will welcome Chicago Med, marking its return. While a winter premiere in early January, following a November finale, offers a bearable hiatus, the nail-biting cliffhanger at the end of 2024 leaves Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) hanging by a thread and Dean Archer (Steven Weber) as her only hope for survival. In an interview with TopMob, Steven Weber shared insights on how Season 10 will delve deeper into life-threatening cliffhangers as Chicago Med enters its new phase, and how it unfolds in the upcoming year.
If you haven’t caught up with the November fall finale or haven’t streamed it using Peacock subscription, the main character Goodwin spends most of the episode lying on her office floor, badly wounded after being stabbed by the widow of a woman whose life was ended due to a difficult decision made by the administrator. She managed to escape when Archer arrived on an otherwise empty Gaffney floor, but he only spotted her as the elevator doors were closing… and it appeared that Cassidy was about to attack Goodwin again.
As the credits unfold, fans are left to ponder Archer’s next action and Goodwin’s destiny. It’s surprising how, in the same episode, Archer went from being disheartened by his demotion to becoming his boss’s last lifeline. During NBC’s One Chicago winter press event, I asked Steven Weber about a potential gap between filming the autumn finale and the winter premiere, to which he responded:
It seems they persisted despite the difficulties, driven by an emotional or dramatic force that kept them moving forward. There wasn’t a pause, making it intriguing to carry on and discover if we could untangle the intricate setup we had carefully established earlier.
The advertisement for the first episode of 2025 made it clear that Archer’s shock at Goodwin’s injured state wouldn’t slow down the story, and that proved to be true behind-the-scenes. I wondered if the same director was in charge of both episodes for a smooth transition or if there was a change during the sequence, so I asked the actor Weber about it, and he clarified:
Intriguingly, there occurred a change in both dialogue and atmosphere, yet all characters managed to preserve the essence of each scene. The conversation flowed seamlessly, transitioning from lively and brisk to heavy and sluggish, but never losing its original vigor. This unexpected shift might leave viewers surprised, delighted, or even pleased. It’s a mystery, but I suspect it will be captivating. Rest assured, old mysteries will be resolved, while new ones will emerge. Time will tell if it turns out to be excellent!
I appreciate it when questions get answered in a confirmation, as Season 10 of Med seems to have more cliffhangers than earlier seasons. The medical drama’s final episode for the fall, which was my favorite out of the three One Chicago episodes ending in 2024, was a tense and delightful way to wrap up the fall finale. Steven Weber also concurred that it was “an excellent, an excellent move to inject this show with, to incorporate the show with, with genuine dramatic tension that keeps everyone hooked.”
I like it when questions are answered with confirmation, as Season 10 of Med has more cliffhangers than before. Steven Weber also stated that it was “a brilliant, a brilliant decision to give this show more dramatic tension that captivates everyone.”)
Indeed, among the three series, “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.” have a history of concluding their finales with a main character’s life hanging in the balance. In the grand scheme of things, Goodwin is undeniably the most crucial character on the show. Unlike other doctors who can easily cover for one another during emergencies in the ED, Goodwin is irreplaceable. Actor Steven Weber recently shared his insights on this tense cliffhanger from the fall finale as part of “Med”‘s new phase under new showrunner Allen MacDonald.
This season, Allen MacDonald and producer Anna Dokoza have taken over, picking up where Andy Schneider and Diane Frolov left off with grace. Although their work is exceptional and the previous seasons were excellent, this one has taken it to a new level. The relationships are more complex. There’s an infectious energy and excitement among not just the cast, but the entire crew as well. Everyone involved seems thrilled, working hard and delving deep into the storylines. Our talented Director of Photography has also contributed significantly by adding rich textures and depth to the setting, characters, and the entire Chicago Med universe. Overall, it’s been a breath of fresh air, much like a boost of adrenaline for doctors.
Allen MacDonald stepped into the role as showrunner for One Chicago’s Med series for the first time during Season 10, following the departures of previous leaders Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov. In contrast to his predecessors, he didn’t have any conversations with them before starting his tenure. Instead, he delved right into the project by watching all 176 episodes prior to getting down to work. Steven Weber has expressed nothing but positive comments about the series’ newfound grittiness this season, even calling it “down and dirty” for the winter premiere, in reference to Goodwin’s cliffhanger.
