Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni have escalated their disagreement from the arena of public debate to a real-world court case. Remarkably, this dispute appears to have found its way into the Marvel universe as well. While Lively’s husband, Ryan Reynolds, has primarily maintained a quiet, supportive role during the open conflict, some onlookers, including Baldoni’s lawyer, have started examining “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” for what they perceive as veiled jabs at Baldoni.
The Marvel film featuring Ryan Reynolds as the lead and co-writer was released in July 2024, prior to the controversy surrounding the Baldoni and Lively movie “It Ends With Us,” which debuted the following month. The point of contention revolves around the character Nicepool, an alternate-universe Deadpool portrayed by Reynolds himself. A social media account called The Spiritual Shift highlighted the resemblance between Nicepool’s hippie-style man-bun and long hair and Justin Baldoni’s signature look.
On January 7, 2025, attorney Bryan Freedman, representing Baldoni, appeared on Megyn Kelly’s SiriusXM show. He threatened to sue Lively and Reynolds severely, stating they would face legal action that could potentially ruin them. Furthermore, he expressed his belief that the character was a direct jab at Baldoni, saying, “If your spouse experiences sexual harassment, you don’t mock Justin Baldoni.
Nicepool maybe wasn’t so nice after all
The Spiritual Shift highlighted an intriguing exchange in the dialogue – a subtle point possibly overlooked during the movie viewing experience. This conversation revolves around another Deadpool variant, Ladypool, voiced by Blake Lively. Nicepool comments, “She just had a baby, too, and… it’s hard to tell.” To which Deadpool responds, “I don’t think you’re meant to say that.” In response, Nicepool declares, “That’s fine. I consider myself a feminist.
In their initial grievance, Lively claimed Justin Baldoni criticized her for gaining weight after childbirth, yet simultaneously referred to her as “sexy” and made suggestive comments about her physique. The Y social media platform, which highlighted the parallel, also mentioned that Baldoni is known for championing feminism and activism in public.
A quote from the film that some perceive as a jab at Lively’s “It Ends With Us” co-star and director is this one from the “Deadpool and Wolverine” blooper reel. Nicepool quips, “My destiny is to someday manage a podcast capitalizing on feminism.” Interestingly, Baldoni does indeed co-host a podcast titled “Man Enough.” The description on its official site explains, in part, that the “Man Enough” podcast delves into what it means to be a man today and how traditional gender roles have impacted everyone.
Everyone is digging in for this showdown
As a devoted fan, I’ve observed that some users have pointed out an intriguing detail in the comic “Deadpool and Wolverine.” It seems that Nicepool meets his unfortunate end when Deadpool uses him as a shield. In a poignant scene set against the backdrop of a flower shop, Ladypool is depicted firing multiple shots, which tragically results in Nicepool’s demise. Interestingly, this flower shop setting is reminiscent of the key location featured in “It Ends With Us.
It was in December 2024 when Blake Lively submitted a complaint to the California Civil Rights Department against Justin Baldoni’s company, Wayfarer Studio. In this complaint, she accused them of creating a hostile work environment and harassment, and furthermore, presented text messages that she claimed were proof of a public defamation campaign against her. A week later, she took legal action by filing a lawsuit in a federal court in New York.
Following the publication of an extensive article by The New York Times concerning Lively’s accusations, Baldoni filed a lawsuit against the newspaper for $250 million, claiming their report was built on Lively’s self-serving account (as reported by Variety). It seems that additional lawsuits are imminent, even targeting Ryan Reynolds. With this pace, it looks like “Deadpool 4” might need to be a courtroom farce to satirize all the drama we anticipate in the coming months.
