In Stephen King’s novel IT, the central plot unfolds across two significant timeframes (one featuring the characters as kids and another 27 years later as adults). However, the chilling tale of Pennywise The Dancing Clown isn’t solely about his interactions with The Losers Club; the menacing shapeshifter has a longer history of terror that stretches far beyond those two key confrontations. If director Andy Muschietti gets his way, viewers will gain a deeper understanding of this extensive terror through his ambitious plan for the HBO series IT: Welcome To Derry.
Last year, it was announced that the premiere season of the upcoming Stephen King TV series is set in 1962 (27 years before the events depicted in IT: Chapter One), and its co-creator has since shared that this is the first part of a three-season series. In a recent interview with Radio TU (translated by Bloody Disgusting), director Muschietti revealed a strategy to gradually move the story back further in time as each new season unfolds, with each episode run taking us further into the past.
The narrative draws from the interspersed chapters of the book which detail Mike Hanlon’s research over the years. These segments are pieces of his ongoing investigation. Essentially, he’s been trying to uncover the truth about an enigmatic entity for 27 years – who it is, what it does, who has encountered it, and so forth… The discussions delve into past calamities such as the fire in the Black Spot, the Bradley Gang massacre from the ’30s, and the Kitchener Ironworks explosion. It seems that whenever Pennywise emerges from its slumber, a significant disaster occurs to initiate the cycle.
Here’s a simpler way of expressing it: In case IT: Welcome To Derry gets renewed for more seasons, the second season would be set in 1935 and the third one in 1908, assuming the math holds true. However, as of now, the series has not been confirmed for additional episodes. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will, given the potential for some fantastic small-screen horror.
In the TV series titled “IT: Welcome To Derry Season 1,” directed by Andy Muschietti, the pivotal element will be “the fire at the Black Spot.” This show boasts an impressive cast such as Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, James Remar, Stephen Rider, and Bill Skarsgård reprising his role as Pennywise. In the original novel, the Black Spot is a bar/club erected in Derry, Maine by a contingent of African-American soldiers stationed at a nearby military base. The father of Losers Club member Mike Hanlon is among them. Unfortunately, the Black Spot meets a devastating fate when prejudiced townsfolk set it on fire, with Pennywise fueling the blaze throughout its progression.
Although we haven’t set a definite launch date just yet, “IT: Welcome To Derry” is among several potential Stephen King adaptations slated for release in 2025. It’s anticipated that the series will air on HBO during autumn, making it ideal for Halloween-themed viewing.
