Assassin’s Creed Shadows Has Been Delayed Again

Ubisoft has moved back the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows again, now scheduled for March 20th. Originally set for a launch in October, then rescheduled for Valentine’s Day in February, the highly anticipated (often subject to both praise and criticism) mainline game in the series has been further delayed.

news was announced through a press release on January 9, stating that the development team has opted to postpone AC Shadows in order to have additional time to effectively integrate feedback from players over the previous three months and ensure optimal launch conditions by maintaining close interaction with the growing enthusiastic Assassin’s Creed community.

Apart from fine-tuning the game, postponing its release for a month might turn out to be a shrewd move. The month of February is particularly crowded with new releases such as Avowed, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and the highly anticipated Monster Hunter Rise.

Yves Guillemot, the co-founder and CEO of Ubisoft, anticipates that Shadows will mark a triumphant comeback for the Assassin’s Creed series. He declared that everyone within the company is supporting their teams as they strive to create the most ambitious installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise yet.

2021 hasn’t been easy for Ubisoft, as their release of Star Wars Outlaws fell flat compared to their high hopes. Despite decent sales and reviews, the game didn’t meet the company’s expected success. According to the developers, the game struggled during the holiday season with various promotions offered.

In terms of Assassin’s Creed, it’s worth noting that the next significant addition to the series, scheduled for 2023, will be a departure from the last major release (Mirage). Contrary to expectation, the upcoming project by Ubisoft Bordeaux is not as expansive in scope and was initially sold at a reduced price upon launch.

For numerous enthusiasts, the year 2020 marked the last significant Assassin’s Creed (AC) game to be released both digitally and physically. The success of Shadows hinges heavily on its performance.

There remains a strong desire for an open-world game inspired by Japan’s Feudal era, even after Ghost of Tsushima outmaneuvered Ubisoft. However, it’s evident that the company isn’t content with riding on the popularity of the period and brand from past successes. Instead, they seem to be planning a more nuanced approach this time around.

Ghost of Yotei could also launch in 2025, motivating the team behind Shadows even more.

We shall see if the additional effort pays off in the end, as Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to debut on March 20 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC (available through Steam, Epic Games Store, and Ubisoft Store), and even an iPad version for those who prefer mobile gaming.
