Adrien Brody Gets Emotional Reflecting on L.A. Fires During NYFCC Acceptance Speech: “This Is Our Community”

Adrien Brody became visibly moved while receiving the Best Actor accolade at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards on a stormy Wednesday, with devastating wildfires burning in Los Angeles.

Brody didn’t forget to acknowledge the heavy thoughts and feelings that we’re all grappling with, during his acceptance speech on Wednesday night. He won for his role as László Tóth in The Brutalist. He mentioned that it had been a particularly tough day for him.”

He then paused as he appeared to get emotional.

He apologized, taking a moment before continuing. ‘It’s tough,’ he acknowledged, ‘to accept such a difficult situation given all the pain in the world. My thoughts are with everyone affected – the families, the animals, and our coworkers.’

“He expressed his apologies, pausing for a moment before proceeding. ‘I understand how challenging this is,’ he said, ‘when there’s so much suffering around us. I sympathize deeply with all those affected – the families, the animals, and our team.’

A blaze ignited in Pacific Palisades on Tuesday, and since then, it has been spreading throughout the Los Angeles region. Another fire that started in the Hollywood Hills on Wednesday night has since been contained, but initially threatened the famous Hollywood Bowl.

Brody expressed his heartfelt sympathies, “My sentiments go out to all those impacted by this tragic incident. They’re in my thoughts, and I believe everyone is sending their prayers for their wellbeing.

As a fan, I was deeply saddened to learn that some of my favorite Hollywood stars, such as Mandy Moore, Anna Faris, Paris Hilton, Billy Crystal, Spencer Pratt, Heidi Montag, Cary Elwes, James Woods, Diane Warren, Cameron Mathison, Ricki Lake, and Jhené Aiko (to name a few), lost their homes in the recent fires. It’s heartbreaking to see their personal struggles alongside their public success.

Sean Baker, the writer-director who won the best screenplay award at the New York Film Critics Circle event, also expressed sympathy for the wildfires in his acceptance speech. He stated, “Our thoughts and prayers should go out to those affected by the Los Angeles fires,” following Jim Jarmusch’s presentation of the honor and his own expressions of concern about the crisis.

Jarmusch expressed concern for our friends in L.A., adding that he has a simple point to make: The ongoing climate crisis is fueled by those who deny climate change and corporate interests prioritizing profit over people. We’re currently living in an era where certain individuals are attempting to portray ‘woke’ as negative, but Jarmusch urges us all to open our eyes and become aware of the reality around us.
