James Gunn has spilled the beans on the fresh faces joining the team in the Season 1 finale of Creature Commandos. The first installment of the DCU introduced an array of vibrant, distinct characters, alas not all survived to see the episode’s end. With Creature Commandos already greenlit for Season 2, viewers were eagerly waiting for a glimpse of what’s to come in the finale, but they got more than they bargained for. A new lineup for the Creature Commandos was revealed, featuring a fan-favorite from the DCEU and two recurring characters from earlier episodes.
Reflecting on the Season 1 finale of Creature Commandos with Rotten Tomatoes, I, as a movie enthusiast, got an exclusive sneak peek into the lineup for this dynamic team. The roster includes some familiar faces like The Bride, Doctor Phosphorus, Weasel, and surprisingly, G.I. Robot – it turns out he’s not deceased, but rather a refurbished model.
Joining the ranks is King Shark, who made an appearance in 2021’s Suicide Squad. Other new additions include Nosferata, a vampire bat creature, and Khalis, a mummy. I must admit, I’m particularly excited about Khalis. As a director, I relish the challenge of creating a mummy, something I’ve never explored before. In fact, my true passion lies in werewolf tales, so this project will certainly bring a fresh perspective for me.
At the conclusion of “The Suicide Squad”, King Shark was among the few remaining members of Task Force X. Similar to Weasel, he has been reassigned to Task Force M. On set, Steve Agee portrayed King Shark as King Shark, but Sylvester Stallone provided his voice in the live-action film. In contrast, Diedrich Bader took over the role of King Shark for his appearance in “Creature Commandos”. This character’s presence further solidifies James Gunn’s earlier DC projects such as “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker” within his new DC Universe.
Meet The New Faces of ‘Creature Commandos’
In April 1998, Nosferata was introduced by Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett in the “Superboy” Vol 4 #50 issue. She is a vampiric adversary of Superboy, who is actually a clone of Superman. You might recognize her from the episode titled “Chasing Squirrels,” where she was one of the inmates at Belle Reve. Prior to that, Nosferata was an ally of Congorilla until the Bride brutally attacked him for harassing Nina Mazursky. There were discussions about incorporating her into the “Creature Commandos” team during Season 1, but it didn’t happen. Since Superman is still relatively new in the DCU, it seems unlikely that she shares a past with Superboy. It’s possible that she was imprisoned at Belle Reve by various characters, perhaps even Batman, who has dealt with similar vampire antagonists like Nocturna in the past.
Khalis is a character recently developed by Jeff Lemire and Alberto Ponticelli who first appeared in issue #1 of Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. in November 2011. The Agents of S.H.A.D.E. in the comics resemble a unit of supernatural-themed superheroes working for the government, similar to the Creature Commandos. Originally known as Hetepkheti Tefnakhte, Khalis was a priest who resided in the city of Bubastis around 2030 B.C. in Ancient Egypt. He is often an adversary of Doctor Fate, although the Doctor Fate portrayed by Pierce Brosnan, introduced in Black Adam, does not belong to Gunn’s current DCU. In the comics, Hawkgirl, who is set to be played by Isabela Merced in Superman, has a complex history that sometimes includes her as the reincarnated spirit of an Egyptian priestess. With the potential for Khalis to be imprisoned in the DCU, these fresh and returning characters promise intriguing possibilities while fans anticipate Season 2 of Creature Commandos.
