Despite the success of Sony’s animated “Spider-Verse” films, their live-action Spider-Man universe has been a challenging creative journey. Critical and audience responses have varied widely, from mediocre to outright negative, with only the “Venom” series managing to be commercial triumphs. The impending release of “Kraven the Hunter” even led to reports suggesting that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe was coming to a halt, at least temporarily. However, if recent whispers about Sony’s future Marvel movies are true, I’m eager for this change.
It’s interesting to note that in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, although films like Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter were produced, none of them actually included the web-slinging hero, Spider-Man – a character these characters are closely associated with in the comics. However, it seems that Sony might be learning from this… to some extent. As per scooper MyTimeToShineHello, Sony is reportedly planning to create movies centered around different versions of Spider-Man instead.
In a similar fashion to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, Sony’s upcoming movies “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” will broaden their focus beyond just the traditional Peter Parker. Instead, they plan to explore different versions of the character as well as other Spider-heroes inhabiting various corners of the Marvel multiverse. Characters like Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Punk, Spider-Gwen (Spider-Woman), and even Spider-UK are potential candidates for the cinematic limelight with this strategy. As someone who’s been indifferent about how Sony has managed their Spider-Man Universe so far, I truly hope that this development is accurate, as it seems like a perfect blend of both familiar and new elements.
Since 2017, Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has handled the straightforward Spider-Man films. In 2026, he will reprise his role in “Spider-Man 4”. By introducing other superheroes, Sony can now create a distinct, standalone franchise focused on Spider-Man that doesn’t have to align with the MCU storylines. Introducing these alternative versions of Spider-Man from movies like “Spider-Verse” could boost their visibility, especially since many general audiences are already familiar with them.
It’s worth noting that Sony has been experimenting with this style on television screens as well. A TV series titled “Spider-Noir” is in development for Amazon Prime Video subscribers, featuring Nicolas Cage portraying an older Spider-Man who works as a detective in 1930s New York City. If the latest reports are accurate, Sony might choose to observe the success of this upcoming show before making any decisions about implementing this supposed plan.
Regardless of other uncertainties, at least Spider-Man enthusiasts can find solace knowing that “Spider-Man 4” will release on July 24, 2026 and “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” has an undisclosed premiere date. The production of “Spider-Noir” commenced last August and is anticipated to wrap up in February, potentially making it eligible for the 2025 TV lineup.
