Because Emilia Pérez received the Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy award at the 2025 Golden Globes, there has been a surge of discontentment on social media. In fact, when I praised Demi Moore for her win in the same category, someone responded with an unwarranted remark suggesting that Karla Sofia Gascón, the actress who portrays the lead role in Netflix’s wild movie musical, should have lost to the star of Substance in this category.
Currently, as I compose this text, I haven’t had the pleasure of watching Emilia Pérez yet and thus, I remain neutral on its Golden Globe accolades. However, it’s hard to conceal my slight disenchantment with this year’s iteration of the long-standing awards ceremony, particularly its treatment of the Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy category. This dissatisfaction stems from the fact that it overlooked, in my view, the funniest comedy of the 2024 best films: Hundreds of Beavers.
Hundreds Of Beavers Deserved A Best Picture, Musical Or Comedy Nomination
I’ve been deeply disappointed for quite some time now about the Golden Globes snubbing “Hundreds of Beavers,” a movie I believe deserved recognition. This underestimated gem is directed by Mike Cheslik and co-written with its leading star, Ryland Brickson Cole Tews. The story follows Jean Kayak, an applejack manufacturer, who after his distillery is destroyed, must adapt to life as a fur trapper in the harsh Wisconsin wilderness winter. This movie, had it been recognized at the Golden Globes, would have been a fitting tribute to its brilliance.
In Eric Eisenberg’s top movie picks for 2024, the film Hundreds of Beavers resembles what it might be like if the classic video game, The Oregon Trail, were transformed into a silent-era movie. Add in cartoonish, exaggerated humor reminiscent of Looney Tunes, clever visual jokes that surpass most parody films, and a cast dressed as animal mascots, and you get the highest-rated 2024 comedy on Lettrboxd, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
What It Was Up Against In The Category
Although Hundreds of Beavers has garnered a great deal of acclaim from both critics and viewers, it’s puzzling why it hasn’t received recognition at award shows like the Golden Globes. One key point to consider is that the Golden Globes have two Best Picture categories: one for dramas and another for musicals or comedies. This means that there is limited space for films in these genres to compete. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the Golden Globes often stretch the definition of what constitutes a comedy, as demonstrated by their selection of The Martian as Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy in 2016.
Despite being grouped with films nominated in the same category this year, which includes a terrifyingly good horror movie like “The Substance“, “Hundreds of Beavers” is the only one that can truly be classified as an outright comedy. This might not have harmed its chances at the Globes, considering they’ve nominated films as preposterous as “Deadpool” in the past. In essence, the film is a low-budget, cartoonish farce that was independently distributed to cinemas (via AP) and garnered most of its attention through word-of-mouth. Essentially, it’s the type of success story that seldom generates the level of buzz generally needed for such prestigious awards, even if I believe it deserved it.

In my opinion, the extraordinary use of green screen in the movie “Hundreds of Beavers” deserves a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars. Although the filmmakers have started an Oscar campaign on X, focusing on Mike Wesolowski as a potential contender for Best Supporting Actor, why not aim for all three categories? After all, who knows what could happen!
