Freddie Prinze Jr. & Jennifer Love Hewitt Are Not Main Character in ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Sequel

Details about the plot for the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel are being kept secret, but it’s been revealed that the reboot won’t center around Freddie Prinze Jr.’s character or Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character from the original film and its 1998 sequel. However, both actors will return to their roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James, respectively. Despite this, Freddie Prinze Jr. has clarified on the Scale Talk Podcast with David Miniatures that they are not the main characters in the upcoming movie. He also discussed how co-writer and director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is incorporating Julie and Ray into the storyline of the new film.

In his recent interview, Scott Prinze Jr. praised Kaytin Robinson for skillfully developing Love’s character, Julie James, and his own character, Ray Bronson. He noted that while they are not the main characters in the film, Robinson managed to make them significant contributors to the storyline. Prinze Jr. emphasized that it isn’t about a Ray and Julie-centric movie; instead, it’s about a new generation taking center stage. He admired how seamlessly Robinson integrated their characters with the rest of the cast, and found her writing to be exceptional.

1997’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” adapted from Lois Duncan’s novel, features Hewitt, Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Johnny Galecki, and the late Anne Heche. This slasher film tells the story of four friends who are pursued by a menacing hook-wielding stranger after they unintentionally cover up a dark secret among them. Directed by Jim Gillespie, the movie was a box office success, although it didn’t win critical acclaim. Regardless, it developed a dedicated fanbase.

The Return of Julie and Ray May Not Be as Big as Fans Hope

As a die-hard fan of horror films, let me share my thoughts on the 1998 sequel to “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” titled “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” and helmed by Danny Cannon. This continuation delved deeper into Ray and Julie’s tale, with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.’s characters now engaged. However, the pair chose not to reprise their roles for the subsequent chapter in the franchise, “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer“. This installment was met with a wave of negative reviews following its direct-to-video release. Fast forward to 2021, a Prime Video series based on the original film ran for just one season.

The reappearance of Prinze Jr. and Hewitt in the I Know What You Did Last Summer series, after over two decades, is set to offer a delightful blast from the past for fans of the initial movie. We’re eagerly anticipating catching up with Ray and Julie, learning about their current lives, and finding out what happened between them since I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (one can’t help but wonder if they’ve stayed together). Joining Prinze Jr. and Hewitt is a skilled ensemble of actors that includes Billy Campbell, Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Haur-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, and Gabbriette. All these new faces are set to grace the series for the first time.

The as-yet unnamed revival of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is set to hit theaters on July 18, 2025. This production, overseen by Neal Moritz, will be distributed by Sony Pictures. Kaytin Robinson takes the helm as director from a screenplay she co-wrote with Sam Lansky.
