Among the rare Hollywood figures, I’ve been fortunate enough to not see my home engulfed by the destructive wildfires ravaging Los Angeles in recent days. In a heartfelt video message, I expressed my gratitude towards the “angels” who shielded my property and have been relentless in their efforts to tame these ferocious flames – the heroic Los Angeles Fire Department.
On his Instagram, Smith posted a video he shared, reminiscing about his evacuation and expressing astonishment at how quickly “the youngsters” extinguished the Sunset Fire in Runyon Canyon. He expressed his admiration by saying they did so “remarkably fast.
I’d like to seize this opportunity to express my deep gratitude – a heartfelt thanks indeed – to the Los Angeles Fire Department and all the other local responders. I’ve learned that teams from Oregon and Las Vegas, entire fire departments, have traveled here to combat these LA fires. As Runyon Canyon goes, so does Hollywood, given its location below us. Yet, these brave firefighters, like angels sent from above, were in the air. Aircraft that seemed to scoop water from a reservoir and then release it on Runyon Canyon, swiftly extinguishing the fire. I can’t thank you enough for your incredible work.
Kevin Smith’s Home Was Saved, but Many More Have Been Lost
As I reluctantly departed from my cherished abode, I couldn’t shake off the gnawing fear that everything I held dear would vanish before my eyes upon my return. In essence, I left with a heavy heart, fully convinced that I was saying goodbye to all my possessions.
In disbelief, I exclaimed something like, ‘It seems all we’ve built is gone.’ Yet, with our lives, pets, and family safe, I found solace in the thought that whatever remained was still there. To my surprise, I wasn’t greeted by a pile of ashes upon returning home. Somebody remarked that angels must have been watching over us. Indeed, they were – clad in strange hats and boots, battling the flames.
The Sunset Fire didn’t ignite until Wednesday night, several days following the initial fires that swept through Pacific Palisades and resulted in extensive property damage amounting to billions of dollars. Just an hour after the fire was initially reported, it had already obliterated over 40 acres of land, prompting evacuations of nearby homes. Yet, firefighters managed to contain the blaze significantly, and by Thursday evening, the evacuation orders were lifted, enabling residents to return to the area.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been fortunate enough to keep my home intact, but the devastation caused by recent events is heart-wrenching. Over 10,000 homes have been reduced to rubble, and the estimated repair costs are staggering at around $50 billion. Stars like Anthony Hopkins, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Billy Crystal, Cary Elwes, Miles Teller, and countless others have lost their primary residences or second homes to flames.
Sadly, for many, the loss of their homes is not something that can be compensated by money. Various fundraising campaigns, local initiatives, and charities have been established to aid those most affected, but the emotional toll this disaster has taken is immeasurable.
