The film adaptation of “” remains shrouded in secrecy, even though filming concluded last year. Despite a scheduled release date in April, there’s been no trailer, no sneak peeks, and no plot disclosures regarding the much-anticipated cinematic rendition of the survival horror video game. However, recent revelations from Sony at CES 2025 might dampen the spirits of fans eagerly awaiting “Until Dawn” to join the ranks of acclaimed adaptations like “The Last of Us“.
During the gathering (as reported by ComicBook), it’s been revealed that the upcoming film won’t follow the traditional storyline we know, but will present a fresh set of characters within the same universe as the game. Interestingly, one character linking the movie and the game is actor Peter Stormare, who played Dr. Hill in the game and will be featured in the movie. Additionally, Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Odessa A’zion, Maia Mitchell, and Belmont Cameli have also been cast for the film.
David F. Sandberg, known for directing both Shazam films within the DCEU, Annabelle Creation (a Conjuring spinoff) and Lights Out, is set to direct Until Dawn. Having returned to his horror roots following the 2023’s Shazam: Fury of the Gods disappointment, it remains unclear what exactly audiences can expect from Until Dawn. With Sony releasing new details about the film, its connection to the original game’s storyline is yet to be determined.
‘Until Dawn’ is One of Many Video Game Adaptions Coming in 2025
Over the past few years, we’ve seen a significant surge in video game adaptations gracing both large and small screens, with an impressive number of these projects finding remarkable success.
Video game enthusiasts are currently in an amazing era, with hits like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Sonic the Hedgehog,” along with “Fallout” and “The Last of Us,” dominating the scene. Upcoming projects such as “Until Dawn” (April release) only add to this wave of excitement. The new season of “Fallout” on Prime Video, the return of “The Last of Us” on Max, the buzz around “Mortal Kombat 2,” and a “Minecraft” movie featuring Jason Momoa and Jack Black are all indicators of a thriving and promising future for video game adaptations. (Leaving out “Borderlands” for now.)
Furthermore, the strong performance of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” in December has secured a fourth film for the Sega series. Moreover, “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” will reanimate the terrifying animatronics from Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Parlor once more. And let’s not forget about upcoming projects like “The Legend of Zelda,” “Ghost of Tsushima,” “The Sims,” “Gears of War,” “Death Stranding”… frankly, we could discuss this list just like Captain America could keep fighting all day.
It remains to be seen if every game project currently in production will reach completion and achieve the level of success that some recent video game adaptations have enjoyed. Ideally, for every successful ‘Borderlands’, there could be numerous ‘Sonic the Hedgehogs’.
