How ‘Den of Thieves 2’ Connects to the First Movie

Warning: Spoilers for Den of Thieves.

Den of Thieves 2: Panthera

The sequel to Den of Thieves: Panthera has just been released in cinemas, serving as a direct continuation of the 2018 heist thriller. Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. reappear in their roles as Nick O’Brien and Donnie Wilson, the law enforcer and criminal duo who can’t seem to escape each other. In the original film, Donnie is portrayed as a getaway driver for his criminal crew, while Nick tries to bring them down. However, it is later revealed that Donnie had orchestrated the entire heist, with the intention of robbing the Federal Reserve without anyone ever knowing.

After the heist, Donnie disappears to Europe, leaving everyone else in the dark about his whereabouts except for Nick. Yet, it isn’t until Donnie is long gone that Nick realizes the full extent of Donnie’s master plan.

From a movie enthusiast’s perspective, here’s how I’d rephrase it: In the sequel, I find myself right where we left off last time. Donnie is hustling on fresh heists across Europe, with one ambitious job that breaks all his usual patterns. Meanwhile, poor Nick is grappling with the aftermath of his own questionable decisions – a messy divorce and losing custody of his girls in family court. With his personal life spiraling out of control, Nick becomes relentless in tracking down Donnie to set things right.

Despite the fact that nothing seems amiss within the Federal Reserve, nobody in his department can find a justification to delve deeper into this matter as it appears there was no theft committed. It’s possible Donnie embezzled millions, but since the money destined for shredding was involved, it looks like no burglary took place at all. Unmasking the heist and pursuing Donnie would only harm the reputation of the police department and Federal Reserve, which isn’t beneficial to anyone.

The Events of the First Film Lay the Groundwork for the Second Film

In Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, the course Nick takes is directly influenced by his past experiences in Den of Thieves and the decisions he makes along the way. Though their narratives differ significantly, these films complement each other remarkably well. Having suffered numerous setbacks, both personally and professionally, Nick surprisingly joins Donnie’s legendary diamond heist in the sequel.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, I must say that the cunning plot of “Donnie’s Heist” left me utterly bewildered. Known for my relentless pursuit of criminals, it’s hard to swallow how Donnie, a mastermind in his own right, managed to slip through my grasp. The audacity of his scheme – stealing millions from the Federal Reserve, right under their noses – is astounding.

However, the cat-and-mouse game between us has sparked an unusual intrigue within me. Donnie’s elusive talents have piqued my curiosity, and I find myself compelled to unravel the mystery behind his success. Thus, in a quest for answers and a sense of redemption, I set off on a journey across the French Riviera, hot on the heels of this enigmatic figure.

In essence, while I grapple with feelings of failure, I can’t help but be captivated by Donnie and his extraordinary abilities. The film promises an exhilarating ride, filled with twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end.

In disguise as a law enforcer, Nick confides in Donnie following an unlawful entry into his residence. Consistent with his character from the initial movie, Nick remains the brash expert he once was. However, unlike the previous film where he aimed to undermine Donnie, this time he intends to collaborate with Donnie and participate in the heist. Having learned from past events, Nick recognizes that his rightful share can only be claimed by taking it, and now he yearns for a slice of the pie for himself.

Nick and Donnie Are What Tie the Films Together

At the core of each movie is the duo of Nick and Donnie. Their relationship forms the basis for the overarching plot that unfolds throughout the films, connecting them all together. In essence, each film can be seen as a separate chapter in a larger story. While the movies can be watched independently, when viewed collectively, the narrative about one police officer and one criminal becomes more expansive. Without Nick and Donnie, there would be no movies. Moreover, Donnie’s existence is intertwined with that of Nick, and the converse holds true, as Nick made clear after breaking into Donnie’s apartment.

In essence, Nick and Donnie discover they share more similarities than differences, leading their adversarial bond to transform into mutual respect and true camaraderie. Given their precarious positions straddling the law and crime, this transition was bound to occur swiftly. As seen in the original film, there’s usually a deeper story lurking beneath the surface that unfolds gradually. Just as with any great heist movie, we only get a full understanding of the plot at the very end.

The sequel to Den of Thieves, titled Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, is currently showing in theaters, while the original Den of Thieves can be streamed on Max.
