The anticipation for the second season of “Severance” is almost at an end, and it couldn’t come sooner. Fan minds have been buzzing with a multitude of old and new hypotheses since the suspenseful ending of Season 1, approximately three years ago. These theories vary from intriguingly plausible to fantastically outlandish, and I can hardly wait to discover which ones hold water and which are empty. Fortunately, the show’s cast has gathered to provide both clarity and mystery regarding some fan theories.
I Rewatched Severance Season 1, And I Have A New Theory About Mrs. Cobel’s Obsession With Mark
To announce that Season 2 of the critically acclaimed series, which will soon be streamable for Apple TV+ subscribers, stars John Turturro, Patricia Arquette, Zach Cherry, Adam Scott, and Britt Lower participated in a video discussion by Entertainment Weekly. In this conversation, various theories proposed by viewers were brought up, some of which were debunked, such as the suspicion that the data being monitored by the MDR team holds no significance (Arquette dismissed this idea as nonsense).
To be frank, I found myself drawn to two theories that the show’s cast didn’t immediately dismiss as illogical or inaccurate. The first one resonated with me because it aligns perfectly with my existing beliefs, and the second one piqued my interest since I want to delve deeper into its implications. Shall we proceed through the elevator doors?
THEORY: Irv’s Testing Door Paintings Are Connected To Hidden Past With Burt
Right from the beginning of their recurring encounters, Turturro’s character, Irving, and Christopher Walken’s charming O&D character, Burt, seemed to be nurturing a relationship that suggested an underlying bond, or even something deeper. This notion could have grown stronger when Innie Burt was compelled to retire as Irving’s visits grew more frequent and disruptive.
Individually, there’s a widely accepted belief that Outie Irving’s artworks depict the hallway and elevator doors of the Testing Floor, which lies beneath the offices where employees who have been terminated work. This notion aligns with the theory suggesting that both Irving and Burt were once sent to the Testing Floor to sever their mutual affection for each other, as if they needed a refresh or reset.
Regarding theories suggesting a link between Irving’s art and an alleged forgotten bond with Burt, John Turturro chose to be cautious about verifying this point.
I think your theory and my theories, we diverge.
Clearly, the response adds fuel to the theory’s intrigue just by supporting it initially, but Turturro’s unique approach of agreement introduces a complex web of thoughts to untangle. In other words, he refers to his own “theories,” suggesting that even he might not fully grasp the complete picture.
Maybe Turturro seems to suggest that his initial assumptions about Irving’s story align with what he thought before learning the actual solution devised by creator Dan Erickson and executive producer Ben Stiller. However, this doesn’t necessarily imply that his theory is incorrect; it just shows Turturro’s talent for being evasive. I’m still optimistic about this guess.
THEORY: Colors Mean Everything In Severance
Indeed, while there are several theories regarding the symbolism of colors in “Severance,” none are as straightforward as claiming that “good” characters wear white and “evil” ones wear black. Instead, these perspectives delve deeper into the idea that the Egan family and Lumon Corporation intentionally employ colors to shape the Innies’ environment. This concept suggests a more complex use of set design and costuming choices within the series.
Patricia Arquette emphasized the importance of considering color patterns, especially noticeable in Lumon’s interior design, when analyzing the show. In her own words, she suggested that viewers pay close attention to the color schemes as they might offer significant insights into the series.
It’s been discussed in various sectors of Lumon about distinct color palettes, including the shades that top management can wear versus other employees. Based on this color scheme, could you possibly be classified as an ‘Autumn’ according to the color theory? Well, it’s hard to say for certain.
Regardless of the colors Harmony Cobel (or her fabricated persona Mrs. Selvig) wears, it would be challenging for me to perceive her as naturally warm and grounded, as one might anticipate from an “Autumn” personality type. Although Selvig appears maternal towards Devon and Ricken’s child, that aspect seems questionable given that it was part of a pretense. Thus, it doesn’t hold much weight in assessing her authentic character.
Regardless, I plan to delve deeper into the intricacies of the blue-and-green equilibrium on the Severed Floor, along with other lines of thought, before Season 2 starts.
Initially, it’s important to acknowledge that Zach Cherry deserves recognition for embracing one of the wildly entertaining hypotheses regarding the goats being the decision-makers at Lumon’s Board, though Turturro may have slightly undermined his humorous response.
- ZACH CHERRY: I’m not going to debunk this. It’s possible the goats could be the Board.
- JOHN TURTURRO: I’m debunking it.
It remains uncertain whether the mentioned theories will be confirmed or disproved, but the initial step towards finding an answer seems to be by tuning in to Season 2 when it premieres on Apple TV+ this coming Friday, January 17.
