Production company Seaview has acquired the Off-Broadway Tony Kiser Theatre.
Starting from January 1st, 2025, the 296-seat theater located in midtown will no longer be known as Second Stage Theater’s venue, as they have decided not to renew their lease at the end of 2024. Instead, under new management by Seaview, this theater is set to transform into a commercial Off-Broadway venue, now called Studio Seaview.
Seaview is known for creating several successful Off-Broadway shows such as “Hold Onto Me Darlin'” featuring Adam Driver, “Danny and the Deep Blue Sea” starring Aubrey Plaza, and an interactive version of “Sweeney Todd.” This company is not only productive in the Off-Broadway scene but also dominates on Broadway. Currently, their Broadway lineup for this season includes “Once Upon a Mattress,” starring Sutton Foster, “Romeo + Juliet” with Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, John Mulaney’s “All In: Comedy About Love,” featuring George Clooney in “Good Night, and Good Luck,” and “The Last Five Years” with Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren.
The production team has opted for a “flexible” strategy when it comes to their lineup, meaning each show will be scheduled individually rather than grouped by season. Kicking off this approach in the spring of 2025 is an as-yet-unnamed project helmed by Sam Gold (known for directing both An Enemy of the People and Romeo + Juliet). Seaview aims to create a series of “event-worthy” theater productions with this new approach.
Originally constructed as a bank back in 1927, this building later underwent a transformation into a theater in 1999. Now, under Seaview’s management, it will retain its original seating capacity of 296 and overall design, with some modern updates to areas like the bar and the entrance foyer.
Greg Nobile, co-founder and CEO of Seaview, stated that off-Broadway’s freedom empowers them to experiment creatively and venture into uncharted theatrical realms. He expressed enthusiasm about filling the venue with productions that defy conventional theater norms and might not fit on a Broadway stage. Here, we can foster work that ignites our passion and holds potential for connecting with viewers.
Carol Fishman, who previously served as Managing Director at Second Stage Theatre and played a significant role in its establishment in 1999, has been appointed as General Manager at Studio Seaview.
