2025 finds me eagerly awaiting the return of “NCIS” for another season filled with K.C. mafia intrigue on January 27th. Over its impressive 20-season run on CBS, this procedural has brought in a plethora of fantastic guest stars like Jamie Lee Curtis, Abigail Breslin, Bob Newhart, Zac Efron, Glen Powell, Millie Bobby Brown, and numerous others. Among them is Scott Wolf, a veteran from “Party of Five,” and his heartwarming accounts of working alongside Mark Harmon have left me in awe.
In three episodes during Season 9, the character portrayed by Wolf was Jonathan Cole, a member of a special ops team and a ruthless killer who came close to eliminating Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo. The season finale saw his character making a tragic sacrifice when a bomb was sent to the Navy Yard via car. Despite an illustrious career in movies and television, Wolf fondly recalls his villainous role. Speaking with TV Insider, he expressed his enjoyment of playing a bad guy, stating:
1. In three Season 9 episodes, Wolf played Jonathan Cole, a special ops team member who was also a killer that came close to eliminating Tony DiNozzo (portrayed by Michael Weatherly).
2. The season finale saw Jonathan Cole sacrificing himself after receiving a bomb via car at the Navy Yard.
3. Throughout his career, Wolf has had numerous roles in movies and TV shows, but he still cherishes fond memories of his villainous role.
4. Speaking with TV Insider, Wolf shared his delight in playing a bad guy, expressing:
The TV series NCIS was fantastic. Mark Harmon, a genuine and kind individual, showed exceptional generosity that made me feel incredibly welcome on set. They crafted an intriguing narrative around my character. Playing a villainous role like this ex-Navy Seal, who seemed to enjoy causing harm, can be challenging. However, the writers cleverly worked towards his redemption in the storyline’s conclusion.
In his mind, Wolf revisited the last episode titled “Till Death Do Us Part,” where the characters Cole and Harmon’s Gibbs had a heated dispute regarding defusing a car bomb. Later on, when Gibbs discovered that the explosive was dangerously close to the lab where Abby (Pauley Perrette) was still present, Cole instructed Gibbs to rescue her while he remained behind to handle the bomb. This moment is what Wolf appreciates most about the character, considering that Cole initially came across as a villain when first introduced. As he put it:
Ultimately, time is running short, and there comes a scene where he tells Mark Harmon, ‘You must leave,’ to which he replies, ‘No, no, no, I’m not going.’ He smiles, preparing himself for sacrifice. He’s deciding to die in order to save others. For a series that rarely sacrifices characters, this is truly remarkable.
Despite Wolf appearing for only a limited number of episodes, his presence left a significant mark on the series, underscoring the importance of his character within the larger narrative. This significance was not just due to his potential to overpower a major character upon introduction, but also because he had an opportunity that not many characters get – saving Gibbs rather than being saved by him.
Moreover, Wolf has a particularly strong affinity for the redemption plotline, despite its conclusion involving his character’s final, selfless act. As he puts it himself:
For approximately three episodes, I’m unsure of the exact timeline, I may still be questioned about it at airports. It’s a widely recognized show, indeed. What particularly struck me was that they developed a storyline around this character, making him more than just a temporary, violent figure who disappears after one appearance.
Despite the delight fans would have felt seeing Scott Wolf reprise his role in NCIS to witness his character’s redemption, it seems he’s content with how things concluded dramatically for him. This redemption arc offered an exceptional moment between Harmon and Wolf that Scott will cherish for years to come, which might just be the best aspect of it all.
Without a doubt, Wolf hasn’t shown signs of slowing down in his acting endeavors. At present, he stars in Fox’s latest series titled “Doc“. Previously, he reunited with Lacey Chabert for a brief stint on “Party of Five“. I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead for his career. For those who have Paramount+ subscriptions, they can catch up with his Season 9 episodes from “NCIS” whenever they need a quick boost of excitement.
