With the impending TikTok ban in the U.S., scheduled for January 19, users are searching for alternative platforms to move to. Amidst the confusion, a Chinese app called Red Note has surprisingly become a strong competitor, taking the top spot on Apple’s App Store rankings for iPhones today.
Despite companies like Lemon8 having established a Western presence for quite some time, Red Note (also known as Xiaohongshu in China) is not widely recognized by many Americans. Much like TikTok and other platforms that are becoming more multimedia-oriented, Red Note provides a digital platform for users to share pictures, short videos, and text posts. By utilizing features such as “follow,” “explore,” and “nearby” feeds, users can view content from their connections, engage with their local community, and uncover global trends.
As per CNBC’s report, Red Note was established in Shanghai back in 2013. Over the years, it has been growing as a significant competitor to TikTok, owned by ByteDance. By July 2024, the app had garnered 300 million active users monthly, and its latest funding round boosted its valuation to a staggering $17 billion.
It’s significant to point out that after Red Note comes a series of other options, all acting as sanctuaries for those fleeing from TikTok. Previously discussed, Lemon8 occupies the second position, with Flip, a California-based startup, coming in fourth. Due to the law passed by the US Congress in 2024, marketplaces like the Apple Store and Google Play could face severe penalties for continuing to host TikTok. At this moment, it appears that the U.S. government has no intention of lifting the ban on the app.
