Fresh accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior and assault have emerged concerning Neil Gaiman, a renowned fantasy writer famous for his books such as “Good Omens,” “American Gods,” and “The Sandman,” which have been adapted into television series.
On Monday, “New York Magazine” ran a cover story called “There Is No Safe Word,” penned by Lila Shapiro. The article presents new allegations against Gaiman, based on interviews with eight women. Previously, in July 2024, the Tortoise Media podcast named “Master” had shared graphic accusations from five women regarding the renowned genre writer. Notably, four of these women were also involved in the “New York Magazine” article.
One assertion stems from Scarlett Pavlovich, a past caregiver to Neil Gaiman and his former spouse Amanda Palmer, who alleged an instance of sexual misconduct against Gaiman, specifically in the form of assault, that occurred in New Zealand’s backyard bathtub during February 2022.
Additionally, she asserted that Gaiman had physically harassed her under the covers on a bed within a hotel room, all while his child was entertained with an iPad in the same space. (Gaiman’s representatives refuted this accusation, branding it both untrue and reprehensible to New York Magazine.)
A complaint of sexual assault against Neil Gaiman was filed in January 2023, yet the probe ultimately didn’t lead to any charges.
In another account of alleged sexual misconduct, as reported in the article published by New York Magazine, a woman identified only as Brenda (a pseudonym) recounts her experience with Neil Gaiman. This interaction took place in the 1990s during a book signing event. Later on, at a horror convention, they had a sexual encounter.
Brenda explained, ‘It appeared as if he followed a pre-written plan.’ She added that he expected her to address him as ‘lord’ right away… It felt like he had slipped into a routine that didn’t involve me in any way.
Forthcoming screen adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s works include:
1. The second season of The Sandman on Netflix.
2. An Amazon miniseries titled Anansi Boys.
3. A 90-minute wrap-up episode of Good Omens, also airing on Amazon.
The Hollywood Reporter has contacted both Netflix and Amazon for updates on the status of these projects, as well as reaching out to Neil Gaiman directly for comments regarding the magazine cover story allegations.
Neil Gaiman has also crafted screenplays for ‘Neverwhere’ and ‘Mirrormask’, scripted an episode of ‘Doctor Who’, collaborated with Robert Zemeckis on ‘Beowulf’, and produced the movie ‘Stardust’.
Neil Gaiman, through his representatives, informed the New York Magazine that their interactions were consensual.
