In contrast to many other blockbusters in 2024, the highly successful film “Carry-On,” directed by Jaume Collet-Sera, was not screened in cinemas but instead premiered on Netflix. This move could have been the key to what might become the most significant success of Collet-Sera’s career, given the airport-based thriller’s captivating plotline. The movie featuring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman quickly climbed Netflix’s Top 10 list, igniting discussions for a sequel, although it seems unlikely to materialize. Instead, we eagerly await the release of Collet-Sera’s next project on the 2025 film schedule, which promises a different kind of tension.
Revisiting the director alongside Danielle Deadwyler, who starred in “Carry-On”, “The Woman in the Yard” is one of several chilling horror films from Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures that are set to debut soon. Take a look at the first trailer below!
In “The Woman in the Yard,” Deadwyler plays Ramona, a widow still grappling with the loss of her husband who died in a car crash that also left her injured. As a result, she finds herself singlehandedly managing her life while caring for their 14-year-old daughter (Peyton Jackson) and 6-year-old daughter (Estella Kahiha). But when things seem to be at their most challenging, the enigmatic woman from the title makes her debut.
Initially, Ramona is not overly surprised and thinks the woman in her yard might be ill or lost. However, she soon recognizes this situation is beyond her comprehension. It’s uncertain if she says anything more than the cryptic statement from her trailer – “Today’s the day” – but it wouldn’t take much else for me to feel compelled to relocate to a distant planet.
In the main role is Okwui Okpokwasili, who has recently delved into various genres, such as playing Doctor Beehibe in “The Exorcist: Believer” and veiled as one of the enigmatic Salem Seven pursuing Kathryn Hahn’s witch in “Agatha All Along.” Although she doesn’t have many lines, Okpokwasili is undeniably chilling with her eerie smile hidden beneath her coverings and extending her blood-streaked hands. One might wonder where the blood originated from, or if her hands are always wet, maintaining their bloody appearance during filming.
I Watched Carry-On And Here Are 5 Dumb Problems I Had With Netflix’s Hit Christmas Action Movie
In this movie, Russell Hornsby plays Ramona’s deceased husband, whose brief appearance in the trailer hints at his car accident death. It’s a pity he doesn’t have a larger role in the film, but perhaps Deadwyler’s acting will be compelling enough to fill the void left by Hornsby.
In the latest horror movie from a well-known director, who started with the remake of “House of Wax” in 2005 and followed by “Orphan” in 2009 and “The Shallows” in 2016, we find ourselves. This director has also directed action movies like “Unknown,” “Non-Stop,” and “Run All Night.” I wouldn’t be shocked if Liam Neeson appeared as “The Vengeful Irish Man in the Yard,” but it’s not something I’d necessarily expect.
Jaume Collet-Sera’s upcoming Netflix release might not match the raw power of a “Carry-On” premiere, but on Friday, March 28, audiences can expect an unsettling experience as creepy neighbors turn everyday life into a nerve-wracking ordeal when they hit the big screen.
