After a long break of three years, one of Apple TV+’s top shows, “Severance”, is making its comeback for its second season. This much-anticipated premiere will take place on the streaming platform this month, and fans are buzzing with excitement over what’s to come next. Given that the thrilling finale of the first season left viewers hanging, the show’s return can’t arrive soon enough. With a host of unanswered questions, “Severance’s” second season has a lot of ground to cover and is eagerly awaited by many.
As a movie buff, the last time I saw the team from Lumon’s Macrodata Refinement division, their inner selves had been activated in the real world due to Dylan (Zach Cherry) and his overtime contingency plan. They attempted to expose Lumon’s wrongdoings to others, but unfortunately, their efforts didn’t last as long as they desired. However, they certainly made a splash during their time.
As a passionate cinephile eagerly waiting for the comeback of “Severance,” I must admit that the buzz surrounding its return is nothing short of electrifying. Yet, amidst all the excitement, it’s not unlikely that some details from the show’s hiatus may have slipped our minds. While many fans might have revisited Season 1, there are still plenty who could use a quick recap. With such a significant gap since its premiere, it’s essential to refresh our memories on a few crucial aspects before diving into Season 2.
Gemma Is Still Alive
She and Ms. Casey Are the Same Person
Undeniably, one of the most shocking twists in Severance’s initial season was unveiling that Gemma and Ms. Casey (portrayed by Dichen Lachman) are actually the same person, implying that Mark’s (Adam Scott) wife is still among the living. Initially, when Mark’s inner self resurfaces outside, he informs Devon (Jen Tullock) about all the distressing events within Lumon. However, it’s only in the climax of the finale that he discovers Ms. Casey is also Gemma. Fortunately, he manages to exclaim “she’s alive” before the overtime contingency is deactivated; whether this revelation will be beneficial remains uncertain.
Beyond the disclosure about Gemma, it’s equally crucial to keep in mind the peculiar nature of Ms. Casey within the confines of Lumon. She appears to be severed from the others, but in a unique way. When she was dismissed, she was escorted back to the “testing area,” indicating that she remains bound to Lumon. Her peculiarities become more intriguing when we ponder her dialogue with Mark during their last wellness session. She mentioned that her life has been 107 hours long. This is not to say she’s been “conscious” for that long, but rather she used the term “life,” suggesting a different status than other Lumon employees. Regrettably, there are no hints yet about how she fits into the broader enigma of Lumon’s operations.
Ms. Cobel Was Fired From Lumon
But That Doesn’t Deter Her Efforts
Due to Ms. Cobel’s failure to disclose Helly R’s suicide attempt to the board, they decided to terminate her employment. Despite her being involved in several secretive activities, she remains committed to her tasks. Under the alias Mrs. Silveg, Mark’s neighbor and Devon’s lactation consultant, she uncovers that Mark’s navel, which was previously dormant, has awakened on the outside. In a rush, she manages to inform Mr. Milchick about the overtime contingency and successfully stops it at Lumon.
Before rushing off to hide Lumon’s evidence, viewers get a glimpse into her personal space. Although her Lumon shrine was already known, some items within it sparked more curiosity. Her devotion to the founder seemed peculiar, but when she angrily destroys the shrine upon being fired, she clutches onto a life support tube that seems to be a keepsake. With “Charlotte Corbel” and “March 17, 1944” printed on it, it’s intriguing to ponder about its former owner.
Helly Is Actually Helena Eagan
And the Severance Procedure Is Looking to Expand
When Helly (Britt Lower) awakens outside, she’s taken aback to discover that her counterpart on the surface is Helena Eagan, the CEO’s daughter and a Lumon heir, who traces her lineage back to the company’s founder. During Lumon’s grand event showcasing the severance process, it was expected that Helly’s outie would deliver a speech extolling its advantages. However, being herself, she discloses her true nature as an innie and shares the harsh truth about the procedure right before the emergency shutdown of the overtime contingency.
Before Helly addresses the crowd, she’s presented with a woman named Gabby (Nora Dale), who is the wife of Senator Angelo Arteta (Ethan Flower). This seemingly ordinary encounter involves Gabby, who shares a unique connection with Devon, as they both gave birth around the same time. Interestingly, they knew each other, but Gabby’s memories concerning childbirth were removed to spare her from reliving the associated pain. It appears that Lumon is considering extending the severance process beyond its current application for their employees, which raises a chilling prospect.
The Show Takes Place in Kier, PE
In the world of Severance, when Irving (John Turturro) finds himself on the outside with his innie consciousness, he stumbles upon evidence that his outie counterpart has been tracking other severed Lumon employees. The motive behind this is still a mystery. Scattered among these documents, viewers catch a glimpse of a regional map labeled ‘Kier, PE’. Since there’s no corresponding state abbreviation in the U.S., it seems likely that either Kier and PE are fictional or the series takes place in an enigmatic location. Given the name of the town being Lumon’s founder, it appears that Severance unfolds in a mysterious setting. Catch up with Season 1 on Apple TV+ now, and mark your calendars for the premiere of Season 2, slated for January 17, 2025.
