This week, the “Castlevania” spinoff titled “Castlevania: Nocturne” will be back on Netflix, much to the delight of its many eager fans who are thrilled about the return of this dark, vampire-themed anime.
Fans are thrilled that Alucard will have a significant role alongside the latest Belmont character, Richter, starting from the final episode of the first season.
Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2
This week marks the return of the series for its second season, and unexpectedly, Netflix has released a brand-new trailer hinting at the emergence of a ‘Messianic Vampire.’
The official description for the second season reads:
In a frantic battle against the clock, the renowned Alucard, accompanied by his team of vampire slayers led by Richter Belmont, are engaged in an intense struggle. The formidable Erzsebet Báthory, the virtually invincible Vampire Messiah, aims to cast the world into an unending night of darkness.
Apart from Alucard and Richter, the second season also includes characters who appeared in the first season such as Maria Renard, a key figure in the series who shares a unique past that makes her a marked individual by the Vampire Messiah. Annette, once a slave but now gifted with magical powers, joins forces with Richter on their mission to combat evil forces.
The French Revolution serves as the setting for this series, allowing history enthusiasts to anticipate certain plot points in the narrative. Yet, even though the conclusion might be predictable, unexpected turns occur when the supernatural elements of bloodthirsty vampires seemingly come close to derailing the French Revolution itself.
A Dark Gothic Dream
Regarding the Castlevania: Nocturne game, the trailer hints at certain aspects to anticipate. Not only are spectacular action sequences with mystical abilities showcased, but it’s also predicted that the series will retain the classic elements that made the original Castlevania a blockbuster—these include dark fantasy creatures, grotesque monster designs, and characters with long hair and flowing garments reminiscent of Victorian times.
Rest assured, as Powerhouse Animation continues to produce the series, fans can anticipate maintaining high-quality standards. This is because the studio has gained considerable experience in animation through projects such as Blood of Zeus, Masters of the Universe, Skull Island, and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.
In a bid to continue his exploration of the dark fantasy realm, Devil May Cry series producer Adi Shankar is equally dedicated to creating an animated version of this action-packed series.
Castlevania Lives On
To be honest, it’s been quite a while since we’ve seen a new main installment of the popular “Castlevania” series, with the last one being “Lords of Shadow 2,” released back in 2014. While the game continues to thrive in spirit through the Metroidvania genre, many devoted fans are eager for a game that expands upon the existing lore.
In the meantime, I can’t help but feel that Netflix could leverage the harmony between video games and TV shows by continuing the anime series. After all, who wouldn’t jump at the chance to explore more of this captivating universe?
Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2 returns to Netflix on Jan. 16.
