The landlord of the actual structure used as Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment building exterior in “Sex and the City” has been given approval to construct a gate at the front of the property, which aims to deter fans from ascending the stairs and disturbing the neighbors by trespassing.
Barbara Lorber, the owner of the building, sought approval from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission to construct a new structure near her apartment, which has evolved into a popular tourist attraction. In a letter, she explained that despite posting a “Private Property — No Trespassing” sign and chain at the bottom of the building’s steps, frequent visits by tourists have become an ongoing disturbance for residents.
After over two decades of wishing that the interest in my porch might fade and supporters would discover a fresh focus for their admiration, I’ve realized that we require something more meaningful,” she stated in the letter.
In the Greenwich Village Historic District, Lorber needed permission to construct a steel and iron gate because of the area’s landmark status. At a meeting on Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Committee granted her this approval.
At the hearing, Lorber expressed his opinion, “The house shouldn’t be enclosed by a gate.” He had harbored this hope for nearly thirty years, expecting it to become reality. However, he now acknowledges, even with his persistent nature, that this issue is unlikely to resolve itself in the immediate future.
Lorber noted that despite measures taken to prevent it, some individuals might still manage to: jump over the fence, perform or rest on the stairs, ascend to the top to peer into the Parlor windows, attempt to open the main entrance door, or when intoxicated late at night, press the doorbells.
1978 saw Lorber acquiring a building, and in the 1990s, a young location scout approached him to utilize this site as the famous facade for Sarah Jessica Parker’s Upper East Side apartment on the TV show (even though it is actually located on the West Side of Manhattan). Lorber agreed to let the series use his building to support Tyson Bidner, who was then a recent NYU graduate and has since become an executive producer of The Bear.
The show “Sex and the City” first aired in 1998 and has since left an indelible mark on popular culture. Over its six seasons on HBO, it gained immense popularity, leading to two movies, a prequel series titled “The Carrie Diaries“, and most recently, the highly anticipated sequel “And Just Like That“.

Feel free to snap as many photos as you like while out on the street,” Lorber said during the hearing, “but remember not to intrude upon our personal space.
