In terms of iconic movie trilogies, “Back to the Future” holds its ground independently. The initial film is regarded as a timeless classic today, although its sequels might not have matched up perfectly. However, as a collection, it’s hard to beat. All you need to do is observe its enduring popularity even after all these years. Just recently, fans flocked to a fan gathering and were treated to a double serving of “Back to the Future,” with both Michael J. Fox and one of his outstanding co-stars in attendance.
While we’ve occasionally seen Fox reunite with Christopher Lloyd or appear with Lea Thompson, there’s another member of the Back to the Future cast who is often overlooked, despite the fact that he appeared in all three films just like the others. James Tolkan played Principal Strickland in the first two Back to the Future films, and Marshal Stickland in the third film. He and Fox both recently attended Fan Expo New Orleans and got a picture together recreating a famous pose.

Being among the folks who witnessed the initial theater release of Back to the Future, I’m thoroughly enjoying this new picture. James Tolkan, now 93, gives a stern finger-wag to Michael J. Fox, who turns 63. It leaves me with a bittersweet feeling of aging, but their continued camaraderie years later is simply endearing.
James Tolkan is well-known for his memorable roles in films over the past few decades. In the 70’s, he graced iconic movies such as “Serpico” and the original “The Amityville Horror”. The 80’s saw him in “WarGames” and “Top Gun”. Yet, it’s his portrayal of the stern, bald high school principal in “Back to the Future” that most people associate him with. After a long career, Tolkan has largely stepped away from acting, last appearing on screen in 2015’s “Bone Tomahawk”, and reprising his role for a fan remake of “Back to the Future”.
It’s noteworthy that Michael J. Fox, despite battling Parkinson’s disease, consistently graces us with public appearances. One might think he would prefer a more low-key lifestyle, but quite the opposite is true. He frequently attends fan conventions, giving his fans the opportunity to meet him, snap photos, and witness special moments like this one.
Even after all these years, Back to the Future remains an enduring classic, maintaining its popularity without a new addition to the series in decades. Talk of sequels, remakes, or reboots persistently lingers, but when the original is this exceptional, the challenge of recreating it seems insurmountable.
