Revisiting the timeless concept of werewolf movies from Universal Studios in the 1940s, the movie “Wolf Man” delves into a fresh interpretation, focusing on the character of Blake (Christopher Abbott). As a husband and father, Blake is attacked by a werewolf while en route to his remote farm in Oregon belonging to his father. The transformation from human to monstrous creature unfolds intimately, with an air of confinement and plenty of disturbing body horror elements. As the story progresses, it leads to an ending that echoes events from Blake’s past.
So, how does Wolf Man end, and what does it all mean? Let’s take a closer look.

What happens at the end of the new Wolf Man?
The majority of the “Wolf Man” story unfolds during a single night, starting from the moment when Blake is attacked by a werewolf, leaving him with a deep claw wound on one arm. After their vehicle meets an accident in the forest, Blake, his wife Charlotte (played by Julia Garner), and their daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth) flee to Blake’s inherited farmhouse following the declaration of his father as legally deceased.
Inside our home, we secure the doors, huddling together as night falls, hoping the peculiar beast that assaulted us earlier stays outside. However, a chilling reminder surfaces on Blake’s arm – the claw marks turning increasingly ominous. Soon, strange alterations begin to manifest in him. His skin transforms, his senses heighten, and most unsettling of all, he struggles more and more to decipher human words.
In an aged pickup truck, the family makes a desperate attempt to flee, yet they’re halted by a monstrous werewolf lurking nearby. As the movie reaches its thrilling conclusion, they are left with no other option but to run for their lives. Blake, growing increasingly ferocious, forces Charlotte to guide Ginger towards safety. In their frantic bid for escape, the original werewolf strikes, and Blake, despite his bestial nature, finds a sliver of his humanity within him to protect his kin. He confronts the beast and successfully eliminates it, only to disclose a shocking revelation – it was none other than his own father, who had been turned into “The Face of the Wolf,” a creature part man, part wolf, according to local folklore. The family soon understands that Blake is following in his father’s footsteps and becoming the very monster he fought.
In their continued efforts to escape Blake’s growing ferocity, Charlotte and Ginger take his father’s gun for protection. However, they are cornered in the exact deer blind where Blake had his first encounter with the beast as a child. As they hide, Blake ascends the blind, growling and snapping menacingly until he stands before his family, writhing in agony, enraged, and struggling to resist killing them. Ultimately, it is Ginger who communicates to her mother that Blake is tormented and desires their help to break free from the werewolf curse. When Blake lunges, Charlotte responds by firing, thus ending her husband’s life and simultaneously liberating him from the werewolf affliction.
At dawn, Charlotte and Ginger step out into the valley close to the farm – the very same valley Blake had vividly described to Charlotte when he invited her to join him at the farm for the first time. In sharing his fond memories of the place where he was raised, Blake expressed his dreams that the family farm could serve as a sanctuary of harmony and affection for himself, his spouse, and their child – a contrast to the years spent there in apprehension under the dominance of his stern father. He yearned for it to be a haven where he could express love towards his family, yet found that the specter of his father’s aggressive nature was difficult to elude. By venturing into the valley in honor of Blake, Charlotte and Ginger symbolize their comprehension of the affection Blake intended for them, and commit to forging a fresh bond between them as they continue their journey.
The ending of the movie is clear-cut and uncomplicated, offering little opportunity for continuation with the same characters. While Blake’s storyline seems conclusive, the mythology established by Whannell in the film presents numerous possibilities for future narratives.
