James Cameron Teases What Is To Come for Avatar 3 With New Concept Art

James Cameron recently had a chat with Empire Magazine, giving fans a sneak peek into what they can anticipate from Avatar 3. The movie, named Avatar: Fire and Ash, serves as the sequel to the 2022 film Avatar: The Path of Water.

Legendary filmmaker James Cameron provides a sneak peek into the visual world of the upcoming movie by unveiling a series of concept artworks to Empire magazine. These artistic glimpses offer fans a tantalizing preview of the continuing Sully saga. Amidst speculation about Jake and Neytiri’s family trajectory and potential encounters, Cameron shared insights into one such artwork titled “Ash Clan.” In this piece, a formidable figure, Varang, is depicted soaring over landscapes on a four-winged creature. Cameron explains that Varang is the leader of a people who have endured immense hardship, describing her as a tough, resilient character. He further emphasizes that Varang will perform acts considered evil by some, aiming to avoid the simplistic good vs. evil portrayal common in previous stories. The role of Varang will be brought to life by Oona Chaplin, whose performance Cameron praises highly, remarking that her portrayal is so convincing that it took the Wētā animation to fully appreciate its brilliance. He adds that despite being an adversary, Chaplin’s interpretation makes Varang feel real and alive.

In the concept art, we see Wind Traders, who gracefully traverse the skies amidst towering Pandoran beasts that dwarf them in size. They are nomadic merchants, much like the camel caravans of ancient Spice Roads. As with all Na’vi, they coexist harmoniously with their creatures. Director James Cameron hinted, “If you have any maritime ancestry, you’ll be drawn to [their] ship.” The upcoming movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is projected to last approximately three hours and will introduce two new Na’vi tribes – the Mangkwan Clan, also known as the Ash People, and possibly a tribe of Fire Na’vi.

Avatar: Fire and Ash premieres on December 19, 2025.
