Early Thursday morning, around 2:30 AM, Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked by an intruder wielding a knife at his residence in Bandra. The swift action of those present soon had him rushed to Lilavati Hospital for surgery. However, it seems that the delay in response from the Bandra police allowed the suspect to escape capture, according to the Crime Branch’s criticism.
According to a senior officer, as reported by Hindustan Times, if the Bandra police had swiftly alerted neighboring stations, patrol vehicles, and beat officers, the suspect might have been captured during the early morning hours when the streets were empty.
Approximately four hours following the incident, at around 4 a.m., police units were dispatched to Lilavati Hospital where Saif Ali Khan was under medical care, and to the crime scene located at Satguru Sharan building in Bandra West. Yet, crucial details like the First Information Report (FIR) and CCTV recordings were not immediately provided to the crime investigation team.
Previously, notifications about important cases would be swiftly communicated to every police unit, encompassing railway stations and checkpoints for arrivals and departures, for high-profile investigations.
Previously serving as an IPS officer, P.K. Jain allegedly connected the rise in street crime to changes in criminal behavior, increased migration, and the ability for outsiders to commit offenses undetected. He proposed that the escalating priority given to cybercrime and VIP protection has led to a neglect in addressing street-level crimes.
In simpler terms, Retired ACP Sunil Deshmukh expressed similar worries, noting that less police visibility on the streets gives criminals more freedom to commit crimes without fear of being caught. He underscored the necessity of enhancing street-level patrols, a strategy that had previously contributed significantly to reducing such criminal activities.
At present, Saif is being looked after by doctors at Lilavati Hospital, where they are keeping a close eye on his health status as it remains stable. His family members, such as Sharmila Tagore, Sara Ali Khan, Soha Ali Khan, and Ibrahim, have been regularly visiting him to inquire about his progress in recovery.
Following the unfortunate incident, members of the Bollywood industry have united to express their disapproval and have urged for increased safety precautions in the vicinity.
