The buddy comedy “A Real Pain” returns, featuring breakout star from “Succession” and “The Social Network,” both playing siblings in this family road trip comedy. Written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, the movie is currently enjoying a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and holds the number one spot on Hulu’s Top 10 list. Released in theaters last November, it has quickly become a streaming sensation since its arrival on Hulu just a few days ago.
A Real Pain” is gaining momentum, collecting nominations and awards. It was nominated for 4 Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category, and won Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for Kieran Culkin as Benji. This victory marks Culkin’s first significant award win in his film career. The American Film Institute (AFI) also recognized it as one of the top 10 movies of the year. The cast recently had an interview with Esquire, discussing the movie and what attracted Kieran to collaborate on Jesse’s script.
As a die-hard fan, I must confess, his script was nothing short of extraordinary. It was bursting with humor, rich detail, and left me feeling completely immersed. There wasn’t a single question or comment scribbled in the margins, nor did I find myself pondering how I would fit into it – a rarity indeed!
Intrigued by its brilliance, I agreed to join the project without hesitation. A year later, revisiting the script, I found myself exclaiming, “Put me on set right now!”
On set, a remarkable moment occurred when he approached during our final shot and inquired if we could discuss the scene. With a grin, I declined, “Nah, scram!” was my response.
The movie tells the story of two American cousins who share Jewish heritage, once tightly bonded but now estranged, embarking on a journey through Poland to visit their deceased grandmother’s house and explore their ancestry. The unlikely duo of David (Eisenberg), the rigidly practical one, and Benji (Culkin), the carefree dreamer, create an amusing contrast as they visit Holocaust memorial sites and endeavor to mend their strained relationship with each other.
The Indie Hit At Award Season
Occasionally, among the flood of intense dramas and biographical films that quickly fade from memory after they end, smaller independent movies make an appearance, surprising us with unexpected Oscar wins. Movies such as Moonlight, Little Miss Sunshine, and Lost In Translation are examples of intimate productions that resonated with the Academy despite having fewer resources compared to their counterparts. The film A Real Pain, with its Golden Globe nominations, seems poised to secure a nomination for Keran Culkin for his portrayal of Benji and potentially even one for Best Picture. The film’s blend of humor and emotion against a somber backdrop appeals to both critics and viewers alike.
