- What Role Will Julien Play in Season 2 of ‘Mayfair Witches’?
The second season of AMC’s “Mayfair Witches” has its share of imperfections, yet it significantly improves on the storytelling from Season 1. The narrative carries forward directly from where the first season ended, with Lasher (Jack Huston) having transformed into a human following Rowan Fielding’s (Alexandra Daddario) childbirth. In the second episode, Rowan is on a quest to uncover the motives behind Lasher’s decision to inhabit a human body and understand how the Mayfair family fits into these plans.
He’s experiencing an extraordinary growth spurt and seems to have a troubling obsession with women from Mayfair that ends fatally. At a certain point, Rowan and Lasher can no longer rely on each other, and her research in the scientific field fails to deliver. By the finale of the episode, Rowan chooses to seek help from Cortland Mayfair, her biological father, in search of answers.
Reflecting on Season 1’s finale, Rowan performed a spell that transformed Cortland into stone, and since then, he has been dwelling within a dreamscape. Here, he interacts with his absentee father, Julien Mayfair (Ted Levine), a character cherished by readers of Anne Rice’s novels. The interactions between Cortland and Julien provide glimpses into their strained relationship. For those who have only followed the series, Julien Mayfair remains an enigma, but his peculiar nature hints at something sinister. In the novels, he ranks second in terms of eccentricity to the notorious Lestat de Lioncourt.
Who Is Julien Mayfair in ‘Mayfair Witches’
Julien Mayfair was exceptionally powerful among the witches born into the Mayfair clan. This achievement deserves respect, particularly since the most potent witches within this supernatural lineage are typically females. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana during the 1830s to Marguerite Mayfair and Tyrone McNamara. Anne Rice first introduced Julien’s character in her 1990 novel The Witching Hour, and further developed the relationship between the Mayfair family and Lasher. She depicted Julien as strikingly attractive, possessing a refined elegance and commanding aura.
The main character of Mayfair lineage boasts abilities such as moving objects with his mind (telekinesis), reading thoughts (telepathy), predicting future events (clairvoyance), leaving his physical body to explore the astral plane, and casting spells. He carries a carefree demeanor yet shows determination when necessary. He’s willing to take extreme measures to safeguard his family and the Mayfair dynasty. Julien fathered one child with his sister Katherine Mayfair, named Mary Beth, and had four other children with Suzette Mayfair’s descendant: Jeannette, Barclay, Garland, and Cortland, making him Rowan’s grandfather. He plays a significant role in Rice’s novels, so the portrayal of his machinations in the adaptation of her Lives of the Mayfair Witches series stirs excitement for viewers to witness his cunning strategies this season.
How Is Julien Connected to Lasher?
Julien’s unique bond with Lasher sets him apart among the Mayfair family members, as he is the sole individual who has had any interaction with this supernatural being. This connection runs deep on both a physical and spiritual plane. Unlike other men in the Mayfair lineage, it was only Julien who possessed the extraordinary magical capabilities necessary to perceive and converse with this ethereal force.
In the gripping AMC series, I found myself as one of the few privy to Lasher’s clandestine plan to assume a human form. As a member of the Mayfair family, I held a unique position that allowed me to guide future generations of witches. This mentorship proved crucial in shaping their beliefs and actions, leading them to conform to Lasher’s designs through rituals and bloodlines that would pave the way for his emergence.
He took part in the family’s incestuous rituals for maintaining pure bloodlines to produce more powerful witches. Compared to other females in the family, Julien was less involved with Lasher’s plans, and remained cautious and aloof towards him. Julien shares similarities with another popular character in Anne Rice’s works, Lestat de Lioncourt, due to his rebellious nature. While he acknowledges Lasher, it doesn’t mean that he’s unconditionally loyal to him.
What Role Will Julien Play in Season 2 of ‘Mayfair Witches’?
In the upcoming season of AMC’s Mayfair Witches, it remains a mystery what my role will be, but indications suggest a confrontation with Rowan as she strives to halt Lasher from amassing power at the cost of Mayfair women. For some time now, I have been an advocate for Lasher and have persuaded numerous generations of Mayfair witches to welcome this spirit into their lives, aligning them with his larger design. Given Rowan’s potential danger to Lasher’s objectives, she may find herself labeled as my adversary.
This season, he’s earned the nickname “master manipulator,” so viewers of the show can anticipate tantalizingly devious plotting and a stellar acting turn from Ted Levine. The scenes featuring Julien in the second episode were exceptional, effectively instilling a feeling of apprehension yet curiosity about this complex character who seems to be both enigmatic and cunning.
